"GOP Will Play The Race Card"
« on: June 21, 2008, 09:57:42 AM »
Just the fact he brings it up means Obama is playing the race card. For a supposed Christian ::) he's awefully judgemental.......God, the more I read or listen to this clown the more of an idiot I think he is!!!

Barack Obama told a group of Florida donors Friday night that Republicans will try to make voters afraid of him, and suggested they would use his race to scare up votes for John McCain.

Apparently girding for a nasty general election fight, the Illinois senator has in recent days predicted that independent GOP groups are waiting in the wings to attack him, and said his presumptive GOP rival is already “fear-mongering” when it comes to foreign policy.

But his comments Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla., seemed to reflect elevated concerns that his campaign to be the first black president would run headlong into political race baiters.

“We know what kind of campaign they’re going to run. They’re going to try to make you afraid,” Obama said at the fundraiser. “They’re going to try to make you afraid of me. He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name. And did I mention he’s black? He’s got a feisty wife.”

The crowd of supporters cheered, and Obama added: “We know the strategy because they’ve already shown their cards. Ultimately I think the American people recognize that old stuff hasn’t moved us forward. That old stuff just divides us.”

He said Republicans would be unable to run on the economy or foreign policy, so the election would ultimately boil down to a choice between “hope and fear.”

His “feisty wife” comment was probably a reference to a Tennessee GOP ad that criticized Michelle Obama for saying in February that she was proud of her country for the first time.

Obama mentioned the ad Friday afternoon at a press conference, where he defended his announcement the day before that he was backing out of the public financing system for the general election. He expects to raise more money on his own, in part to defend himself against independent GOP attack groups.

While there is no imminent, large-scale threat from so-called “527″ groups — such as the “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” group that attacked John Kerry in 2004 — Obama said they’re waiting for him.

“527’s pop up pretty quickly and have enormous influence and we’ve seen them,” he said. “I don’t think that I am off the wall here to see that … a lot of outside groups that are potentially going to be going after us hard.”

The presumptive Democratic nominee, though, has faced down a viral whisper campaign, carried out through anonymous e-mails and Web site postings, in which race and religion are front and center. Obama launched a new Web site to debunk the false attacks, some of which suggest he secretly is a Muslim, that his wife harbors racial angst against white people and that he is not patriotic.

Some of his detractors also have referred to him by his middle name, “Hussein,” though McCain usually condemns attempts to suggest he is Muslim.

The issue of race was repeatedly invoked during the primary campaign against Hillary Clinton. Bill Clinton was criticized for comparing his win in the South Carolina primary to Jesse Jackson’s victory 20 years ago. Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell told an editorial board that some white voters just wouldn’t support Obama because he’s black. Another supporter, Geraldine Ferraro, said Obama was seeing such success because of his race.

FOX News’ Bonney Kapp contributed to this report.

Newsweek has him ahead of Mccain by 15 points in yesterday's poll.

FOX had him ahead of Mccain by 5 points last week.  Seems these is a big hilary bounce, as her voters are now choosing Obama over mccain.

Obama now has 3 times as much $ to spend than Mccain.  It'll be 4 times as much $ by the end of the summer.   Mccain isn't getting donations, and Obama is, simply put.

The campaign chose to compete, at least for now, in 11 swing-voting states - Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin - and seven others that have reliably voted for Republican presidential candidates in the past several elections - Alaska, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota and Virginia. Obama is spending an estimated $4 million for this first wave of ads.

That is pathetic right there, what the TX GOP is doing.  They're playing the race card, without a doubt.

If it keeps getting worse for the GOP, they could make McCain drop out at some point and cover it up with some excuse like his age or whatever. Then bring in a fresher candidate to maybe get a spike in voters. I can't see McCain winning this race.Yes he may have the hardcore racists, fundamental christians, and your right wing radio nuts but that won't be enough.

That is an option.  However, there is one thing to remember.  Mccain has what, 60 million bucks right now?  (It could be higher, I don't know what his on-hand is)

that money came from people who are now owed favors later.  If you accept their $, then change people, the new guy accepts all the old obligations with the $.  Also the new guy would have to mirror mccain's positions - or right alientating the base.

Plus most people would see right through it.  Once they have made the decision: "I'm a white repub but I will vote for Obama", it's going to be hard to undo that.  That's a big step for them.

This is going to be an interesting election.  Rove has a bag of dirty tricks.  So far he's attacked obama's wife, pastor, church, etc.   Perhaps he'll step up to Obama himself, one day.

yet he isn't well liked by any of those groups.  Neither the neocons or the theocons consider him one of their own.

Romney?   Gingrich?    Certainly not Gulliani or Huckabee.

he was popular among independent voters.  Problem for mccain is that independent voters are in a 'change' mood.  Mccain isn't about change, he's about war strength.  Obama is the 'change' guy.

it's a change election - bad economy, end of an unpopular war.  historically, the country changes parties in the white house too.  Ask Bush in 92.

The republican majority that they had for 6 years could not get anything positive done. The slim majority the democrats we have at this point ain't much to cheer about except for a few like Dennis Kucinich. All that being said, I really believe that Obama is a great candidate to run this country. I remember when the Republicans were having their primaries and when McCain would speak, Romney would kind of chuckle and vise versa, that really really got to me. There were times when Obama could have slung some mud on Hilary during the debates that they had, and I mean wide open opportunities, but he didn't. I really am proud that he has made it this far considering all the circumstances that it usually takes to get a party nomination.

Some are.

Most aren't.

And some, thanks to affirmative action, technically graduated from college but all you have to do is talk to them for five minutes to realize they have the IQ of a stump anyway.

I know some white people like that.  But instead of calling it affirmative action, they call it legacy admission*.

You do have a point, but if you compare the sheer number of black people promoted beyond their level of competence so organizations can feel good about being "diverse" to the handful of super-rich white "legacies", the impact isn't even close.  Most of us have to deal with the former on an almost daily basis, while rarely encountering the latter.

True, but Obama is educated and well spoken. So let's all quit with the racial slurs, like calling him a nig.
