Intra-workout supplementation...is it beneficial?
« on: June 26, 2008, 10:31:21 AM »
I am sure everyone here is familiar with the theories of Milos and the whole long duration, 10 rep giant sets he advocates.  If one were to train in this fashion or a similar fashion, such as Poliquin's German Volume Training, would loading up a shake with the ton of BCAA/EAA's/Creatine/Glutamine/Beta-Alanine/etc really be more beneficial than not doing so?  Can the body really absorb that amount of nutrients and shuttle it to the desired places with increased bloodflow in a less-than-60min timeframe.

I have heard that unless your workouts exceed 2hrs, intra-workout supplementation is probably not needed, perhaps not beneficial when looking to maintain positive hormone balances and anti-catabolism.  BUT, as Milos seems to imply, would it really promote and accelerate muscle growth?

what i listed wasn't my idea, it is what is common.  there is also glutamine in the koloseum shakes and what milos recommended.  just using it as a point of reference

using during a workout isn't a bid deal.. it doesn't start really digesting until after you're done wiht it unless i'ts fast acting carbs or carbs in general. It's why they give out banana, gels, etc. during long distance and endurance races. YOU CAN assimilate it while working out but in the time frame a workout goes through.. unless i'ts sugars, it won't be hitting you very hard.

yeah me too. ive always though that if you wanted protein immidietly after your workout was done there was no point in drinking the whey after your done, because then you getting protein 20-40 minutes after your done. ive always though that timing it out with the digestion rate of whey always made more sense.

and the glucoe/cortisol connection you told me about also makes  much more sense to me than drinking glucoe post workout... which we have discussed in other threads as pretty much being pointless.

small amounts of glucose and BCAA'S. glucose for cortisol and BCAA's on there own with perhaps citrulline malate and arginine nothing else. to many aminos will cancel each others singular effects out. i could see some creatine beforehand and caffeiene to aid in energy and atp production along with strength.

but intra workout, small amounts of glucose and BCAA's

Ok, maybe glutamine is shit as far as direct results for building muscle. But for overall health, if it helps your immune system, it could be benificial, by the less you are sick, the less workouts you may miss overtime. And it may help when dieting strictly, in sparing muscle lost. I don't know.

But, my question is can it actually be detrimental to muscle building? Can it really block the absorbtion of creatine? I take a spoonfull of creatine about 30 min before workout, and another spoonfull in my post-workout shake. I stopped taking glutamine, cause I heard it battles with creatine for absorbtion.

So, if I was to still take glutamine, would 5gms in the morning and 5 at night be ok, while still taking creatine around my workout?

I usually take creatine 2 months on, 1 month off. So, I could just take glutamine around my workouts when I am off creatine.

ok, glutamine has become an urban myth it seems. First, the studies showing immune improvment are IV not oral, as are the majority of the studies on anti catabolism. the reason for this is the oral glutamine has little to no bioavalibility and becomes a substrate for gluconeogenesis(glucose formation), basically making it costly sugar. It may act as a glutaminergic and have benefits for sleep and it may help the stomach but little remains intact after an acidic stomach envoironment.

so, gluatmine is a waste of money orally because it is poorly assimiliated not to mention the fact that it is made de novo(spontaneously) from other aminos and this conversion is highly efficient.

so imo, dont waste your money.
