Good list - I assume you also have some pittance of Korean as well?

As an aside you could communicate with many more. Not sure if you've come across Papameinto, but you would prolly understand it as you would a few other languages of my region too - as the non-indiginous ones are generally based on some blend of Dutch, English, French and Spanish.

I speak poor German, Spanish, and Korean....enough Dari and Pashtu..to get the average dirtbag to do what i need him to do. We push the Rosette stone program pretty hard now, and its free for us.

If I could speak them. I read German better as I took 2 years in college but unless ur emmersed...u loose it. I got to use some a few months ago when i was there. It came back abit. I have no real aptitude....but my parents were amazing. My mom speaks French, Gaelic and passable Italian. My dad spoke and could write ancient greek, Latin, italian and spoke Thai pretty well.

Yeah she's from Ireland and they took it in school....its the best language to know, few people speak it.

Icelandic isn't bad to know either; no one understands you and there are only 260,000 Icelanders in the world. I had the fortune to study it, shunning the modern, continental Scandinavian languages as boring.

In order:

1-English, German (Bilingual)
2-French (Fluent)
3-Dutch, Icelandic, Spanish (passable)
4-Italian, Korean (Can get by)

Dead Languages in my repetoire include: Latin, Ancient Greek, Old English, Old Norse and Old and Middle High German, of which I know Latin and Old English the best; the others are rustier.

I think it's more like 25 languages a year,

and those are aboriginal spoken languages disappearing from the mountains of Borneo or the extinction of Tundra people tribes or whatever. French or Italian are probably not in danger anytime soon.

People who work in communistic creative fields also benefit from the latest news coming from European fashion/art worlds.

The marketplace is changing. Maybe Obama isn't so wrong and knows what challenges 20-year-olds will be facing.

I'm all for learning other languages for education. But he specifically mention Spanish. That is my point.

Yeah I do see the political aspect... every rightie blogger including Rush immediately slammed out some anti-Hispanic, illegal alien hate column, further alienating any vote the right might get from that portion of the population. So in a sense worked for Obama.
