Worked my neck mainly for football and some martial arts. If your into contact sports, always good insurance to work the total neck area, including the upper traps. Though doing trap exercises themselves does not always build up the neck.

Wrestlers bridges could be the best all around (360 degrees at times) movement. Heavy weighted neck strap or towel resistance from a training partner also works well. Some guy's even hook up a cable to a neck strap. One of the main functions of the neck is twisting from side to side, as well as front to back. So applied exercise accordingly. Go lightly at first, but the neck is a very strong short range muscle group.

A lot of BB's always seem to have a weak looking neck. In relation to the rest of their muscle mass, some do have pencil necks. Most always tell a athlete and a powerful man by his muscular (not fat, doubled chin types) necks and traps. Older people may benefit from neck exercise. Good Luck.

yep used that when I played football HS and college. Very very rare to see these anywhere other than maybe a football weight room or rehab facility. They are great.

I used to train at a rather old-school gym.
Quite a few guys trained their necks as depicted above as well as using methods described by jpm, so nobody really looked at you at all funny when doing them.

We even had a “community” leather neck harness for anyone caring to use it, although I purchased my own to use out of fear of cooties.

Damn dude, if your neck is 16", then hell with the direct "neck work." Most of the exercises associated with that, like weighted neck rolls, will give you nothing but upper spinal problems down the road.  Stick with heavy (whatever "heavy" is for you now) shrugs, deadlifts, and cleans.  Those will build you a thick neck if you stay consistent.

I do those same excercises and also side to side laying down.  I only do it once a week though.  I never did neck workouts until I started playing semi-pro football.   I don't think shrugs are enough if you want to prevent neck injuries.  Also a thick neck looks good.  Sometimes that's the only visible mucle showing so its nice to have it be muscular.

I get sick sometimes to.  Anybody know what causes that?
