i remember reading where a couple of competitors said Shawn saw Haney on the scale backstage at the 88 Olympia and said it looked like someone let the air out of him, he was just awed at the size of Haney.

sure, if you call "delusional" having the balls to square off with the champ.  he had the mindset of winner.  sure he never got the big one, but look how far it got him.  i give Shawn mad respect for that.

naaa ND....i know u know bodybuilding...c'mon this was said at the end of haney's reign.....which means franco and dickerson just won it 5 mins ago and shawn was in a whole new league for a smaller BB. i think he had good enough reason to think it was possible.....shawn was very complete and at a young age...

Nothing is wrong with saying that you want to beat another person. Because you say something, does not make you delusional. That would mean every young kid in America- or around the the world for that matter- would be delusional and never even attempt to follow through on their dreams. We would never see a quarterback better than Johnny Unitas. No guitar players more melodic than Johnny Smith, or louder than Pete Townsend.
And without that mentality, Dorian Yates would have never had a measuring tool to know just how good he had to be...

Yeah he was delusional in thinking he could beat Haney or Yates the sport past him by years ago and he knew it , hence why he wanted the judges rotated because it thought it would favor his physique ( i.e. smaller )  and for every kid that does make it to the top their are millions of delusional wanna-bes that never did

Shawn Ray was never going to beat Lee Haney or Dorian Yates simply because they carried more muscle mass than he did while carrying equal or better conditioning
