This upcoming school year's training-please critique
« on: August 14, 2008, 04:27:02 PM »
Hey there everyone, I'm going to be trying to switch from a 3 a week training cycle to a four a week, here's my plan, let me know if there's anything i should be changing or anything you would recommend altering.  I'm just a recreational lifter, i like to work out, not training for any contest, ect.  For a reference, i usually switch up most of the exercises on a week by week basis, but i keep in similar last exercises for each muscle group;

Day 1: Back and Bicep
3 exercises for each, 3-4 sets
Last exercise: some kind of pull up (back), some kind of cable curl (bicep)
4 sets of abs (various) 15-30 reps each

Day 2: Legs (quads, hams)
3 exercises for each, 4-5 sets
Last exercise: machine leg press, leg curls
4 sets of abs (various) 15-30 reps each

Day 3: Chest and Tricep
3 exercises for each, 3-4 sets
Last exercise: some kind of crossovers, some kind of cable extension
4 sets of abs (various) 15-30 reps each

Day 4: Calves, Forearms
3 exercises for each, 3-4 sets
Last exercise: calve extension on leg extension machine, behind the back curls
4 sets of abs (various) 15-30 reps

I'm going to try and do this as soon as school starts in a week and a half or so.  Let me know if there are any changes you advocate.  thanks.

A whole day for just calves and forearms is a waste IMO you could make a better split than that. Hell most people don't even train forearms at all. And where's shoulders?

oh, you're right, i frogot about shoulders! i was reviewing it and thought i had something else to add, ill replace forearms with shoulders.  I was figuring that the 4th day would be an easier workout, depending on how much time, i would do more abs, idk.

i would not do shoulders the day after chest unless you take an extra day off in between.  forget about "wrist straps" and "belt" too ::) ::) ::)

that makes sense about shoulders and chest, although because i'm doing them day one rest day 2 rest day 3 rest day 4.  it may not make too much sense, but generally because the chest is so sore i can make sure to only do the movements far enough or at a good enough angle to just hit the shoulders.  I'll go through it one week and see how i'm affected.

I can see how you wanna end with pull ups to see if you're spent, personally I think it's such a good exercise I prefer to have it earlier in my program (I even start with it myself)
For hams you finish with leg curls, whats your main exercise for hams then?
If you want to do forearms there's plenty of room to throw in a few sets of wrist curls or whatever somewhere.
