Cardio
« on: August 18, 2008, 06:04:31 AM »
Hey curious if you think 30-45mins a day of low-high intensity running is good to lose fat.I'll start off slowly and gradually pick it up to wind sprints then go slow again and cycle it like that.I'm coming off a shoulder injury "was hit from behind in hockey" Separated and tore :( So i've kinda put on a little pudge lol that i'd like to get rid of.Im starting to slowly get back into the gym just taking my time so i don't injure it again. Anyways any cardio advice i'd appreciate. One last thing any out of this world core workouts anyone can suggest would be appreciated as well. Thanks :)

if you don't care about leg mass then run...if you do skip the running it tears down the legs i would do a real stair stepper or jump on a tread mill and work at a good pace at an incline

FWIW, that's a myth.  Running, biking, and any other leg-intensive cardio activity will result in a net loss of leg mass ONLY if you don't dump calories back into your body to repair the damage that's done to the muscle fibers from these activities.

The only problem with running is the impact on the joints and knees.

I prefer swimming.

Yeah I hear ya...running isn't any good for bigger guys.  Like overload said, our joints take enough beating just from doing normal things, no need to aggravate 'em more.

If you are worried about your joints, hit the elliptical.  It's a good workout and not hard on the knees at all.  You could do some good interval training on there or even just a comfortable 45 minute workout.

What kind of intensity and duration do you use in the pool?

Moderate for about 45 minutes after training. Switching different strokes every few laps. Butterfly is the only thing that bothers my shoulders so i never do that.

HIIT on none lifting days. Sprint a few laps, rest a few minutes, repeat for about 20-30 minutes.

Sometimes i see how far i can swim underwater without coming up for air.

Switch it up all the time, no method really.

If your knee joints hurt, just do what I do - run on your hands.

Firedrineman, here is my two cents:
From my experience, running is a great way to lose fat.  Lots of bodybuilders will tell you that running will burn up all your muscle, that is not true.  Most of these guys telling you this are perma-bulkers and have never been in shape.  Yes if you run marathons then of course your body will be stripped of muscle, but running a half hour about 5 days a week you should be fine.  You can do intervals or just run at a steady pace.  I used to run about 2.5 miles on my school track in about 25-30 min time, and I was still able to put on muscle and burn 40lbs of excess fat.

As far as the core, well that is just a fancy term for abs used by personal trainiers.  Just use whatever ab machines and exercises are available and get real lean and that will bring out your abs and strengthen them.

anyone over a sertain weight (thats fat or lean) will end up with bad knees from running, theres no need for it as u can use a variaty of cardio equipment to get the same results

wow, running is cardio 101. if youre too big to do something as simple as running then try assessing your overall fitness rather than worrying about how much you bench. or take the needle out of your ass. damn meat heads.  ::)
