Quote
A famed and feared amateur boxer, Povetkin´s career has been second to none. He has won two European and one World title and also triumphed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The Tsar is now eagerly awaiting the highly-anticipated showdown with Klitschko. In order to set up the world title clash, he needed less fights than the legendary Mike Tyson, who became the youngest champ of all time in his 27th bout.

http://alexander-povetkin.com/englisch/index.html

He may not look like much, but Alexsander Povetkin is a super-heavyweight gold medalist with an iron chin and undefeated record.

On his impending fight with the much taller Klitschko:
“I am waiting for you, Klitschko, you can´t hide any longer.”

for super heavyweights, i've never seen any that look like boxers, they all look like slightly overweight guys.  not that he's not big, but if i saw him in the street i'd never think he was a world champion boxer.  do they just not do any sort of bulking up?

Looks very good but I worry about his defence, how would he do against the current World champion I wonder?

Also, his brother has come out of retirement to fight Sam Peter.....Vitali is better than Wlad

Ridiculous. He's not even the best heavyweight right now. The greatest boxer the world has ever seen is Sugar Ray Robinson. You know nothing about boxing

Good points about his defence.

His fighting style is reminiscent of Rocky Marciano.

As far as amateur records go, shit, you can't get much better than Povetkin.

He's a 4-TIME olympic gold medalist in the Super-Heavies.

P.S. - Tyson is highly overrated in the grand scheme of things.

His style is not even close to Marciano's at all. Povetkin has the typical pawing jab eastern-euro style with slow plodding footowork. Marciano was a swarmer with huge heart. Povetkin is garbage imo. He's a decent fighter but he went 'life and death' with Eddie Chambers. Wladimir would defeat him with ease.

Yeah, he's garbage, yet he's won the gold medal in boxing four times.

He's only started competing as a serious professional somewhat recently.

Time will tell how good he really is; judging from what I've seen, he's amazing.

Doesn't look plodding or slow at all; this guy goes in for the kill.

Getting gold in the current amateur system means fuck all. It's pretty much "fistic fencing" with horrible judging. Povetkin is talented but he will fail when matched against Wlad and others.

And also, educate yourself. Here is the Ring Magazine's list of the 80 greatest fighters of the past 80 years. Please never mention Povetkin being "the best ever" again. I do have some quibbles with this list though. Sam Langford, and Charley Burley should be ranked much higher, and Hearns should definetly be ranked above Galaxy who is an overrated asian fighter. But besides that it is a fairly solid list.

No, wrong; people that really know boxing can't name one real competitor Mike Tyson beat.

Anyone can be a "KO ARTIST" fighting a bunch of "tomato cans" (Mike's own words);
shit, Butterbean made a career out of it.

Also I'd have Monzon in at least the top 10. Him or Harry Greb are the greatest middleweights of all time.

Did you even watch the Olympics? The scoring changed after Roy Jones JR was blatantly robbed of a gold medal in Korea. Now the scoring is based on judges sitting at ringside who hit a button every time they see a punch land using the white area of the glove. 3 of the 5 judges have to hit the button within 1 second for the punch to be scored. This leads to a piss-poor throw a jab and run style. The amateur system has really went downhill and does nothing to prepare fighters for the pro's. Professional judging as bad as it may seem at times at least has some credence with the 10 point must system.

He was a hard hitting heavyweight. But guys like Earnie Shavers, Joe Louis, George Foreman, and even Dempsey would have to be ranked above him as ko artists imo. That still leaves him with pretty damn good company though

Tyson's infamy is bigger and badder than his boxing talent;

indeed, many promoters have gotten rich pushing his street-tough "KO artist" image.

The sad thing is, once faced with real competition in the form of one Evander Holyfield,

he was exposed for being the overrated hype machine he was.

No need to mention his embarrassing loss to Buster "never-heard-of-him-prior" Douglas.

Since Tyson has not even the skill to beat a real Olympic Bronze medalist like Evander,

he doesn't deserve mention in a thread about real Olympic GOLD medalist like Povetkin.
