Close grip bench form??
« on: September 01, 2008, 11:16:29 AM »
Whats the proper form when doing close grip bench, are you supposed to keep your arms as close as possible to the body, or keep them flaired out? I've been trying to figure this out for a while now through trial and error..any advice?

I like to keep my elbows close to the body, elbows out brings in too much chest IMO.

Ok, I mean I feel them both ways, but I'm trying to figure out the right way to do these, on the negetive should the bar hit near the bottom of the chest?

It doesn't really have a choice if your arms are close to your body, the only way to get it higher is to point your elbows out.

You are trying to hit triceps right?

I read this question a couple of years ago on another board and follwed the advice worked well for me. It said flair out and when you come down pretend you have a phone book on your chest and stop there when you progress to the top do not lock out. You can use a lot more weight when not locking your elbows in - more weight via more muscle for your tris supposing you up your weight every week. Once you get in that that spot between where the phone book would be and the top of the lift you wont have to worry about your chest being involved. I prefer to do my close grips on a decline bench.
