Calf development and running
« on: September 03, 2008, 04:05:00 PM »
Does anyone have any information/opinions on how calf development is affected by running? Right now I am training calves twice a week and running 7 days/week.

Would it be beneficial to rest the legs the day after calf training? I am a little fuzzy on this because, obviously, I walk the next day after calf training, but I was wondering if running might add some extra detrimental effect?

Any help is appreciated.

If you are like me and have good calf genetics then running will not hurt them, if anything it may help.  But it does depend on how long a distance you run.  If your are running marathons then you will likely shrink all your muscles.

probably not really answering your question but just a piece of advice for good calf development without actually working them directly...

when you do leg curls, be sure you dont arch your back and keep your feet straight with toes pointed out. doing this in addition to your regular calf routine should help a lot if you dont already do leg curls like this. i was experiencing little calf development until i began doing leg curls this way. calves get bigger and you dont even need to set aside extra time for them!

other than changing size and shape proportionately with weight gain.. calves are pretty much as they are via genetics. You can work towards better "genetic" potential and tap the most out of them with heavy sled drags, boxing, jump rope, and calf raises from all angles.. but that's pretty much it.

isnt running 7 days a week a little excessive? there's still 4 more years to the olympics, dont wear yourself out
