Re: Let the Weider boys keep their Press Passes!
« Reply #100 on: September 11, 2008, 03:58:17 PM »
You know what, let Weider keep their precious press passes, they will all be on the unemployment line next year anyway and this will be a moot point.

Jeez. Chic is getting his info 3rd hand. He doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about. He's just acting like the good old company boy he is trying to make his keepers look good.

Since when is anybody above criticism? The venue does suck. As usual the Weider boys have a problem with the truth. Overall though, we gave their show better coverage before, during and after than they did. That's a fact. I've also done nothing but praise Robin Chang for the job he does.

The bottom line is, apart from the production personnel we need to cover their show, passes of some kind should also be given to our contemporaries of Peter McGough, Alan Donnally, Joe and Ben Weider, David Pecker, etc. Oh, wait, that's right, they are not our contemporaries, our parent company isn't filing bankruptcy. Silly me.

by John Romano

I find this latest post from Romano as amusing as his first....3rd hand info? I beleive getting it from Robin himself, and having the emails and faxed request more than constitutes first hand...

All the rest is nothing but the proverbial red herring thrown out by Romano, and his obsession/ hatred of Weider/ AMI....nothing to do with wether press passes were denied as they claimed.....even Blechmans account of what transpired (although skewed in his own right), answers the question at large, which was THERE WAS NEVER ANY DENIAL OF PRESS PASSES.

BTW, John...no one gives a shit if you're ale to cover the contest the way YOU think it should be covered, for that matter, you've made it abundantly clear that you have better things to do, that you already know the results, and you don't want to go....thats fine as well.

If you're speaking in a official capacity, and wish to not have the 2 press passes as you've indicated numerous times now...just say the word my friend and POOF....they're gone.

As for the rest of your "debate" on the AMI front...you still don't get it....for 5 years now, you've been painting the bankrupcy picture, and how Flex mag will be gone....five years later...you're STILL talking the same shit...and were still here. You're obviuosly not smart enough to see that despite what the parent company is doing (AMI)...it has no berring on what Flex/ MF is doing....the division that stands on it's own , and turns a profit. If AMI went bankrupt tomorrow....the magazines would still be doing business as usual, as they're not relient on AMI for anything.

Also, being that you're so sure AMI is going to the shitter in the next few moments...I'll be happy to post the latest financial report, which states that David Pecker has secured the finances needed to carry on....

Let me know on that press pass thing as soon as you can, so they can be given to someone who wants to be there...

Subject: WSJ: American Media May Receive Lifeline

American Media May Receive Lifeline

Tabloid Publisher Gets Backing of Creditors For New Bond Offering By RUSSELL ADAMS August 28, 2008; Page B4

Struggling tabloid publisher American Media Inc. may have found a lifeline.

In a deal that likely saves the company from having to seek bankruptcy protection, the Boca Raton, Fla., publisher of the National Enquirer and Star magazine has secured the backing of many of its creditors for a new bond offering to refinance $570 million in existing debt.

That's welcome news for a company struggling through a declining advertising market and burdened by more than $1 billion in debt. AMI previously had said that if it couldn't refinance at least $389.5 million in debt by Feb. 1, 2009, it would have to liquidate assets or seek protection from creditors.

"This transaction, if it's successful, will take the pressure off them,"

said John Page, a senior analyst at Moody's Investors Service. AMI's corporate family rating of Caa2, Moody's fourth-lowest rating, is currently under review for possible further downgrade. David Pecker, chairman and chief executive of AMI, said the bond offering "is the first step in revitalizing the capital structure of American Media."

Under the terms of the bond offering, holders will be able to exchange existing debt for discounted notes that pay higher interest and warrants for up to a 20% stake in the company.

AMI set a Sept. 25 deadline for the offer, but already has agreements from 33% of holders of notes due in 2009 and the requisite 51% of holders of notes due in 2011. The new notes extend the due date to 2013.

The agreement caps a productive summer for AMI, which also publishes several health and fitness titles including Shape. Earlier this month the maligned Enquirer was validated when former senator and presidential candidate John Edwards admitted on national television to having an extramarital affair. The Enquirer had begun reporting the story nearly a year earlier but its scoop was largely dismissed by the mainstream media until Mr. Edwards's admission.

The Aug. 11 issue, which reported new allegations about Mr. Edwards's affair, sold 738,000 single copies, 11% above its weekly average of 667,000 copies for the first six months of the year, according to the Audit Bureau of Circulations.

Mr. Pecker said ad sales for the first half of 2008 -- which showed a decline in ad pages in the low single digits compared with a 7.4% decline industry wide, according to the Publishers Information Bureau -- show AMI is "pretty much holding our own in a challenging environment."

However, there were signs of difficulty in the second quarter. Ad pages at the National Enquirer declined 14% in the quarter, while ad pages at Star were down 10%, according to the PIB.

In recent quarters AMI has been able to largely offset revenue declines by cutting administrative staff and production costs. AMI posted revenue of $119 million for the quarter ended June 30, a 2% decline from the year-earlier period.

AMI has two private-equity owners, Thomas H. Lee Partners and Evercore Partners. A source familiar with THL's thinking said the company believes the exchange offer gives AMI enough running room to continue improving its profitability.

Romano can talk all the shit he wants about Flex but it's consistently the best magazine on the market right now as opposed to MD which runs the same bullshit every damn month, a 10 page Valentino "spread", with the exception of Victor Martinez a bunch of third tier pro training articles and columns, Evan Centopani, Ben White, Trey Brewer in every single issue and 350 pages of ads.

although it may seem just like paper work, requiring a written request and a deadline for a press pass actually makes sense from a legal and security standpoint...IF your allowing someone onto your property next to  your athletes you a liable, and you need to know who is getting that access and there has to be some approval even a limited background check if needed...there are a lot of nut bags out there and who knows what they would do getting so close to the athletes....remember Nancy Kerrigan and the ol' pipe to the knee

people cant just expect they can show up the day of the event say hey i need a press pass.

The latest from MD.com

This is great...Steve has no clue as to how many passes they had last year?

Oddly, he doesn't seem to recall there being a deadline this year, nor did he meet it last year, or the year before that....same old same old...

As pointed out earlier...150 press passes...149 people managed to get their credentials in on time.

What gets me the most....is that this "miscommunication" was a direct result of Steve Blechman running his mouth to Romano, who in turn, decided to go whine about it on their radio show....when asked about this from Robin directly...Steve claimed to not know anything about it, or what was on the radio or on the website.....thats strange....Robin only taked to ONE person about the passes between the 5th and the 8th....Steve Blechman.

The reasoning for a deadline is simple....there are only so many seats in the pit, and generaly speaking, the major mags get the best placements for taking pics...the idea that Robin Chang should call over 100 people to ak them what they want is ludicrious at best...especially when it's for THEIR magazines, or web site, etc....this sense of entitlement from MD is laughable....appararentl y, they've forgetten that we have our own magazine...and could care less if they cover it...that's for their content. If you're in the business of covering boybuilding, i would think covering the biggest show of the year might be of interest to have in your magazine....

Everyone should call Blechman's number and leave a message.

Everyone should call and impersonate a melting down Derek Anthony... Blechman would probably giggle like a little bitch at that shit

What's Romano's problem anyway? Is he jealous of Chick? He's probably used more drugs thank Chick and probably for the same length of time lol... Romano's been using since the 80's and gets lost in an XL tshirt. On "NO BULL RADIO" he's always uninformed, and gets corrected by Dave Palumbo atleast 5 times in the first half hour... it's pathetic... he's like Palumbo's annoying little brother that picked up the phone and figured he'd join in on the conversation.

As long as Romano keeps posting about it, Bob's gonna keep throwing down the ownings...  :)

In the good old days we had York vs the Weiders and the Weiders were the bad guys. Nothing much has changed except the names of those involved. Weiders have always been thrifty with gifts, prizes, etc. The first Mr Olympia, Larry Scott, got a tray and $1,000! Joe and Ben hit the jackpot when the charged big money to stage professional contests and the promoters had to award all the prizes and look after the judges, etc. The Weiders sold their magazine empire for a reported $350,000,000 while Dave Draper, Robby Robinson and many others got peanuts for endorsements, etc. The same thrift is seen in this thread. They hand out very little and even don't pay for their stooge/mouthpiece to speak on their behalf.

I haven't followed this thread since page 1, but I did catch the fact there were 150 press passes to be split up?  And MD can get two to four of them?

Methinks if you gave them TEN passes, they'd take a lot more pics and have a lot more coverage of the event.  I always find their ASC coverage to dwarf the pics and content they get from the O, the crown show of the season.

IMO, even if you don't like them, you would still let them cover your event and put pics/interviews from your event... to their millions of readers.  The better the show looks in the mag, the more people who will want to attend it next year.  I thought MD's coverage and pics were very limited last year, and if they only had 4 guys on the whole show, I see why.

Anyway, I'm just talking out of my ass.  I have no dog in this race and see it as silliness.

There are 150 seats...obviuosly, there are a certain number alloted for the various mags, pubs, internet, writers, etc....

I used the number 149 out of 150 to illustrate the point that MD was the ONLY ones to have any issue (again) as they failed to meet the deadline (again) like last year, and the year before that.....

We don't really care what coverage they decide to put out...it's for THEM, and their magazine. We have our own to cover the Olympia, etc....the fact that Romano thinks he's doing US a favor is a joke, especially given the fact he badmouths the event the other 11 months of the year.

There is no doubt of this

The money goes into MD`s pockets when they sell Mr Olympia magz.People visit THEIR website for ongoing coverage ...whose benefitting ? MD.

Of course MD wants to make the Arnold look better , they hold a grudge against the Joe Weiders MR O.Has an MD athlete ever won it ?

But the man whose name is plastered over the contest they prefer , ARNOLD was an AMI/WEIDER/MUSCLE&FITNESS employee correct? So the Best will only work for the BEST , thats why Arnold was with *WEIDER*  ::)

Not only that, but they pay 50K to cover the ASC....they contribute ZERO to the Olympia.

Kinda explains why they get the "phone call" from Lorimer every year....I'm sure Robin would be more than happy to have an engraved invitation sent for their press passes for the same $$$$

What's this "we" and "us" stuff? I thought you were an employee of Bodybuilding.com, not Weider Publications?

I've had a contract with Weider for 3 years now, in addition to being on the OLympia comittee and working with Robin Chang all year on the OLympia as well as other projects.
