Pele didn't win three world cups on his own. He didn't carry the team like Maradona did. Without Pele Brazil was still the best team. Without Maradona Argentina wasn't. And there are certainly not 20 players at his level. That's absurd.

Hard to say one guy was the "greatest" athlete of all time. I have several picks...

Barry Sanders - I feel fortunate to have seen him play.

Jerry Rice - Look up work ethic, Jerry's picture will bet next to the definition. The man was a Legend among boys.

Barry Bonds - Like him or not, he is arguably the best player of his generation. Even pre-drugs.

Michael Jordan - What can you say? Another legend who played among greats, and still managed to stand above.

  The one thing that all these guys have in common is that they are American and played American sports that no one outside the U.S cares about. How can one be proclaimed the best athete if one plays a sport that only 4% of the World's population cares about?
