Joe Biden Says He Was Arrested In South Africa Decades Ago
By Sarah Ruiz-Grossman
02/21/2020

Former Vice President Joe Biden has begun telling a story on the campaign trail of his being arrested in South Africa decades ago. The only problem is, he doesn’t appear to have mentioned this incident publicly before this month.

The Democratic presidential candidate told some version of the following story at one campaign event in South Carolina and two in Nevada over the past two weeks, per The New York Times: On a visit to South Africa decades ago, he claims he tried to visit Nelson Mandela in prison and got arrested.

“This day, 30 years ago, Nelson Mandela walked out of prison and entered into discussions about apartheid,” Biden can be heard saying in a video from the South Carolina event on Feb. 11. “I had the great honor of meeting him. I had the great honor of being arrested with our U.N. ambassador on the streets of Soweto trying to get to see him on [Robben] Island.”

Former civil rights activist and Georgia congressman Andrew Young was the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations in the late 1970s when Biden visited South Africa. Young told the Times that he had traveled with then-Sen. Biden to South Africa but had never been arrested there — “and I don’t think he was, either,” Young said.

A New York Times search of news media did not find any mention of Biden being arrested in South Africa. He did not note it in his 2007 memoir, in which he discussed a ’70s trip to South Africa, according to the Times.

Biden’s team did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

In a 2013 visit to the South African Embassy in Washington after Mandela’s death, Biden talked about a 1977 visit to the country. He reportedly said he had met with anti-apartheid leaders there but did not get to speak with Mandela, who was serving what would ultimately be 27 years in prison. Biden did not appear to have mentioned being arrested.

The former vice president is trailing behind Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in early national polls of the Democratic primary, just one day before the Nevada caucuses and within weeks of the South Carolina primary and Super Tuesday.

WATCH: Biden Can’t Remember What Son’s Job Was, Thinks He Was U.S. Attorney General
Daily Wire ^
Posted on 2/22/2020, 8:14:10 AM by TigerClaws

Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden could not remember what his late son Beau Biden did for work during a CNN town hall event on Thursday night, falsely claiming that his son was “Attorney General of the United States.”

“Never direct the Justice Department as to who they should or should not indict and under what circumstances they should or should not,” Biden told the audience at the event. “That is an independent judgement to be made.”

“My son, the one who, my deceased son, was the Attorney General of the United States,” Biden falsely claimed, adding, “and before that, he was a federal prosecutor in one of the largest offices in the country in Philadelphia.”

“And I’ll tell you what, he wouldn’t even talk to me about anything he was doing – his father – and he shouldn’t have, and I didn’t have any control over either one of those things,” Biden added.

Biden’s son was not the Attorney General of the United States; he was the Attorney General of Delaware.

He seems to be slipping. Like for real, not trying to make fun of him.

JOE BIDEN CLAIMS TO HAVE WORKED ON 2016 PARIS CLIMATE DEAL WITH CHINESE LEADER WHO DIED IN 1997
Newsweek ^ | 2/25/2020 | David Brennan
Posted on 2/25/2020, 6:15:37 PM by RightGeek

Presidential candidate Joe Biden appeared to make another misstep during a campaign event in South Carolina on Monday, claiming to have worked on the Paris Climate Accord with former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, who died 19 years before the agreement was signed.

The former vice president spoke at the College of Charleston on Monday as the Democratic presidential hopefuls prepare for Saturday's South Carolina primary, which the Biden campaign is hoping will supercharge his as-yet sluggish charge for the party nomination.

Biden touted his two terms as vice president under President Barack Obama, arguing his experience made him the right person to take on and defeat President Donald Trump.

The former vice president cited his work on the Paris Climate Accord—from which Trump withdrew early in his presidency—as evidence of his ability to work with world leaders and gain their support for multilateral projects.

But Biden, who has made multiple blunders while on the campaign trail, undermined his point by apparently confusing Chinese leaders, claiming to have worked on the deal with former premier Deng Xiaoping who died in 1997.

"One of the things I'm proudest of is getting passed, getting moved, getting in control of the Paris Climate Accord," Biden told the crowd. "I'm the guy who came back after meeting with Deng Xiaoping and making the case that I believe China will join if we put pressure on them. We got almost 200 nations to join."

It’s understandable that he would make this mistake. The guy was in the Senate from 1973 to 2009. Running for that position has been his life’s work.

Biden says he worked on 2016 climate accord with leader who died in 1997
By Ebony Bowden

WASHINGTON — Gaffe-prone former veep Joe Biden put his foot in it again on Monday — claiming to have worked on the 2016 Paris Climate Accord with a Chinese leader who died 19 years earlier.

During a campaign stop in South Carolina ahead of the state’s primary on Saturday, Biden told a crowd his experience on the world stage as vice president under Barack Obama made him the right person to defeat President Trump.

“One of the things I’m proudest of is getting passed, getting moved, getting in control of the Paris Climate Accord,” Biden told the crowd in a video circulating on Twitter.

“I’m the guy who came back after meeting with Deng Xiaoping and making the case that I believe China will join if we put pressure on them. We got almost 200 nations to join,” he said.

Only problem is Deng Xiaoping, China’s former paramount leader, died in 1997.

It’s unclear if Biden was referring to China’s current President Xi Jinping, who took power in 2013 and oversaw China’s involvement in the 2016 climate deal.

The presidential wannabe has been plagued by constant word salad on the campaign trail — on Monday night telling South Carolina voters that he was running for the United States Senate.

The 77-year-old, whose White House bid is now on life support, is also under fire for claims he was arrested while trying to see Nelson Mandela in South Africa.

Over the past two weeks, Biden has repeatedly claimed he was cuffed in Soweto with the US ambassador for trying to visit Mandela at Robben Island Prison in the 1970s.

But Andrew Young, the former US ambassador to the UN who traveled with Biden to South Africa, denied that ever happened.

“No, I was never arrested and I don’t think he was, either,” Young, 85, told the New York Times.

Biden is pinning his presidential hopes on black voters in the Palmetto State, long considered his campaign’s firewall, after disastrous showings in Iowa and New Hampshire.

But new polls show Biden’s huge lead has vanished and he is locked in a tight race with Vermont socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders.

Biden Camp Backs Away From His Story About Being Arrested Trying to Meet Mandela

The former vice president’s version of history gets shaky.

By JIM NEWELL

In the final minutes of Tuesday’s Democratic presidential debate, Sen. Bernie Sanders mentioned former South African President Nelson Mandela. He was citing an inspirational quote from the dissident and statesman, but it also summoned the specter of the peculiar stories his rival Joe Biden has been telling about Mandela recently.

During an event in Columbia, South Carolina, on Feb. 11, Biden offered a reminiscence about the depth of his personal history with Mandela. “This day, 30 years ago, Nelson Mandela walked out of prison and entered into discussions about apartheid,” Biden said. “I had the great honor of meeting him. I had the great honor of being arrested with our U.N. ambassador on the streets of Soweto trying to get to see him on [Robben] Island.”

He would mention his being arrested trying to see Mandela “twice more in the next seven days,” according to the New York Times. And in one mention, he offered a coda to the story: “After he got free and became president, he came to Washington and came to my office,” Biden said in Las Vegas on Feb. 16. “He threw his arms around me and said, ‘I want to say thank you.’ I said, ‘What are you thanking me for, Mr. President?’ He said: ‘You tried to see me. You got arrested trying to see me.’ ”

Both the Times and the Washington Post, in separate looks, have found no evidence to support this story, and no instances of Biden mentioning it until recently. The U.N. ambassador at the time, Andrew Young, has said that he was never arrested in South Africa, and he didn’t think Biden was, either.

The Biden campaign didn’t respond to a request for comment from the Post, which described each claimed incident as “not remotely credible”—the “streets of Soweto,” are hundreds of miles from Robben Island, which is an island—or to five requests for comment from the Times. In other words, for four days after the Times story first went up, neither Biden nor Biden’s campaign offered a word (on the record) about the South Carolina front-runner’s fascinating, previously untold story for which there is no apparent supporting evidence.

It evoked a different piece of late 20th century history: the 1988 presidential campaign, when Biden’s bid for the nomination unraveled after he delivered passages from an autobiographical speech by the British Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock as if they were his own words. Then, Biden had talked about “my ancestors, who worked in the coal mines of Northeast Pennsylvania,” although his campaign was unable to come up with the names of any of his relatives who’d been coal miners.

In Tuesday’s post-debate spin room, an answer to the Mandela questions finally came. As Biden campaign staff and surrogates arrived there, the first question a reporter asked them was to clarify the story.

“He took a trip with a CODEL [congressional delegation] in the ’70s, he was separated from the CBC [Congressional Black Caucus] members that he was traveling with at the airport when he landed,” Biden’s deputy campaign manager and communications director, Kate Bedingfield, told the reporter. “When making that remark, he was talking about his long record of fighting apartheid.”

So he wasn’t arrested?

“He was separated from the group he was with at the airport,” she said.

This explanation at least aligns with something that Biden has referenced in the past. In a statement his office released when Mandela died in 2013, he mentioned a trip he made as a 34-year-old senator, in the 1970s.

“When I exited the plane, I was directed to one side of the tarmac, while the African American congressmen traveling with me were sent to the other side,” the statement read. “I refused to break off, and the officials finally relented.”

So he was not arrested “on the streets of Soweto” with the U.N. ambassador during an effort to see Nelson Mandela in prison. He was, however, briefly separated from his black colleagues by the apartheid regime on the tarmac. There’s a wide gulf between those stories, and we know that (at least) one of them—the one he’s told most recently, while campaigning for president—is flatly untrue.

Biden’s hands-off ‘naked woman’ scenario at campaign event raises eyebrows
Bizpac Review ^ | February 28, 2020 | Tom Tillison

Speaking at a campaign event in South Carolina on Tuesday, Biden was talking about the Violence Against Women Act, which he drafted as a U.S. senator, when he offered an ill-advised scenario of a woman walking naked to say that “no man has a right to touch her.”

“No man has a right to lay a hand on a woman for any reason other than self-defense,” Biden said. “If someone in this room got up, took off all their clothes, and walked out the door, no man has a right to touch her.”

Biden Forgets What Show He's On After Saying He'd Make Trump Look Sleepy in Debates
Bronson Stocking |Posted: Mar 01, 2020

Immediately after telling Fox News's Chris Wallace on Sunday that he would make Donald Trump look sleepy in the presidential debates, Joe Biden forgot what national television show he was on.

"I can hardly wait to debate him on stage. I want people to see me standing next to him and him standing next to me. We'll see who's sleepy," Biden said sleepily.

"Mr. Vice President," Wallace said, "thank you. Thanks for your time. Please come back in less than 13 years sir," referencing the amount of time since Biden last appeared on the show.

"Alright, Chuck. Thank you very much," a confused Biden said.

"Uh, it's Chris but anyway," Wallace corrected the candidate.

A startled Biden interjected, "I mean Chris. I just did Chris. No. No. I just did Chuck. I tell you what man. These are back to back. Anyway. I don't know how you do it early in the morning, too."

Biden was probably trying to say he just did Chuck Todd's NBC show, but who knows. The 77-year-old seems to be having more trouble than usual stringing a sentence together.

While campaigning in South Carolina, which he did for a long time, Biden repeatedly told people he was running for the Senate. He also said he was looking forward to appointing the first African American female senator, an impossibility both in terms of a president being able to appoint a senator and the fact that the first African American senator was elected in 1992. He then confused South Carolina with North Carolina.

Now that Pete Buttigieg is expected to leave the race, Biden may emerge from Super Tuesday as the moderate alternative to socialist Bernie Sanders. The Democrats are screwed.

Joe Biden admits he was not arrested during trip to South Africa in 1970s
By Yaron Steinbuch February 28, 2020

Joe Biden on Friday walked back his claim that he was arrested in South Africa in the 1970s during a trip to visit anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela, according to a report.

The former vice president has repeatedly claimed on the campaign trail that he was arrested during the trip, using the narrative as part of his efforts to win the support of African Americans before the South Carolina primary.

“When I said arrested, I meant I was not able to, I was not able to move. Cops, Afrikaaners, were not letting me go with them, made me stay where I was,” Biden said in a Friday interview on CNN.

“I guess I wasn’t arrested, I was stopped. I was not able to move where I wanted to go,” he said about his trip, when he traveled with members of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Biden said he was separated from the group at the airport.

“They had me get off a plane — the Afrikaaners got on in the short pants and their guns. Led me off first and moved me in a direction totally different,” he told CNN.

“I turned around and everybody, the entire black delegation, was going another way. I said, ‘I’m not going to go in that door that says ‘White only.’ I’m going with them.’ They said, ‘You’re not, you can’t move, you can’t go with them.’ And they kept me there until finally I decided that it was clear I wasn’t going to move,” Biden added.

Biden says he worked on 2016 climate accord with leader who died in 1997

“And so what they finally did, they said OK, they’re not going to make the congressional delegation go through the black door, they’re not going to make me go through the white door,” he said.

During his launch party in Columbia, South Carolina, this month, Biden said: “I had the great honor of being arrested with our UN ambassador on the streets of Soweto trying to get to see (Mandela) on (Robben) Island.”

He repeated the claim at least two other times, including when recounting a story about trying to get his future wife, Jill, to marry him.

During a Feb. 16 event in Nevada, Biden said that as president of South Africa, Mandela visited him in Washington.

“He threw his arms around me and said, ‘I want to say thank you.’ I said, ‘What are you thanking me for, Mr. President?’ He said, ‘You tried to see me. You got arrested trying to see me,'” Biden said.

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,” the former vice president said during a campaign event in Texas on Monday. "All men and women created by - you know, you know, the thing.”

During the stop, he also accidentally referred to Super Tuesday as "Super Thursday" before correcting himself.

The Hill ^ | March 3, 2020 | Marty Johnson

President Trump highlighted former Vice President Joe Biden's gaffes late Monday, saying the Democratic presidential candidate doesn't know "what office he's running for."

"Sleepy Joe doesn’t know where he is, or what he’s doing," Trump tweeted. "Honestly, I don’t think he even knows what office he's running for!"

biden definitely is a twit, i didn't like him back when he babbled during baseball's steroid hearings. he complained that his lack of steroids made him not able to excel at sports. congress has time to worry about roid use in baseball.
