You either "get it" or you dont. They know their songs are fucked, but maynard allows it up to an idividual perception of how you see it.

Definitely my favorite band of all time.  I finally got to work on a video with them, their latest one off "10,000" days "Vicarious".  Adam Jones and Alex Grey (artist who did a lot of their art work and has worked closely with the band for years) came out to the studio for a lot of hands on work.  Great guys to work with and a fucking blast.  The same studio who did the Parabola video did the Vicarious video as well.

Definitely see them live you can, they are the best live band I've ever seen.

they are amazing musicians and i've seen them live 3 times.  that being said, their music, the actual songs, is terrible.  its not melodic, catchy, well formed... its just not very organic.  From a technical standpoint though, they are amazing.

Saw them with Rage Against the Machine and many others at La La Palooza in the early 90's...then started listening to them again (2002) while i did cardio and it was great

I'm a gigging musician/songwriter bob dylan wannabee... and i don't see anything wrong with minor keys or melodies, but you're right about the crazy time signatures, they are not conducive to what my definition of "organic" rock or music is.
Here's the best live band on tour right now (cuz u2 ain't touring currently), my morning jacket.  These guys blow TOOL off the stage and Jim James has ten times the vocal abilities of maynard:

Oh yeah, very different.  to me though, they bring a much more pleasing sound.  Like i said, i don't take anything away from tool as musicians, i mean... they are fucking crazy good live.  but i've never walked away from one of their concerts thinking about how beautiful the music they just performed was.

Hah, Phish.  I saw them and the Dead a few times.  Couldn't get into either of them, but I do have to say Jerry Garcia was a pretty damn good guitarist, when he was on heroin.

I like the dead alot but i don't put them in the same category as phish.  I like the alternative country aspects of the dead a ton and jerry was unlike every other guitar god.  I do get wayy tired of the jams sometimes.  its cool a few times and then it gets really old.

Yea, I heard some tapes of some of the Deads shows from the 60's, some 40 minute jams from Garcia playing "Darkstar" were pretty incredible.  They aged pretty badly though.  I saw one of the last shows in Memphis in '95 and it was pretty bad, Garcia could barely stand.  Helluva guitar player though, one of the greatest.
