Does anybody remember the massive Curtis Leffler? The guy was a top heavyweight amateur in the 90's. One of the biggest and freakiest motherfuckers ever. He made Palumbo look soft and non vascular. Curtis eventually made his way to venice to train in the years prior to his death. he was the freakiest man in Golds up till that point. I remember Paul Dillet saying the same in the gym. Curtis died from steroid abuse. Had a massive heart attack while in the hospital. He was initially brought in for a blood clot in the leg if I recall. Curtis was looking purple in the gym those days. He had gotten the nickname of PURPLE DINOSAUR. Anybody else remember this freak of muscle?

I saw him compete in the nationals in the 1990's and even judged him once .
Incredible muscularity and density. I actually dropped my jaw, OMG style, when I saw him hit a crab shot when I judged him.
Pitty for him , his shape and structure ws not well suited for bodybuilding.

Curtis Leffler died of a synthol injection in his leg, as verified in this video (at the 3:35 mark):

IMHO, Jim Quinn hasn't been given the credit where credit was due in regards to "Palumboism". This guy had the look before anyone else.

Or even Ivan Putski

Curtis attempted to qualify for the WSM in 95 a few days after entering a bodybuilding show.

He was came is at about 6% BF and was SO full of himself; he was stating that "he would win" that he "had the fitness and the WSM guys were just strong" etc, he came across badly... at the start

When the events commenced - with him coming across as the biggest, most arrogant shitfuck you could imagine - his performance was sub par due to being in bodybuilding shape from the aforementioned show.

After the bad performance in the first event he tangibly changed into the most humble of guys, it was fucking bizarre. It was if he had discovered a new pursuit and a new respect for the strongman game.

He didnt disgrace himself, and would have undoubtedly done some major damage in future shows..

Thats not arrogance. I watched the same wsm. Its confidence. I know ive never went on the platform saying it's ok to lose. He was a competitor. You come to compete. You should beleive youre the greatest, period.
Most bb dont lift heavy when dieted down. And he was doing strongman...

This was the guy that worked with Vitor Belfort early in his career when he looked like an absolute savage.

I absolutely remember Curtis from my days at MuscleMag. Often we'd have something about the guy in the magazine.

I never actually met him, though.

If I recall, the muscle beach news section, written by Steve Neece (also RIP), frequently featured him, in some capacity. Stuff about his training, size, his strength, his strongman experiences, etc.

It seems to me I remember Curtis always being spoken of as being a gentleman. The proverbial gentle giant.

His structure, etc., as is mentioned, wasn't ideal for physique competition. However, there's no question he was one gigantic and veiny dude.

P.S. Too many think a strongman's bulk is a result of his being a "permabulker/lazy". Those who suggest this simply are ignorant to the more nuanced elements of strength sports. Sure, some have competed in strongman while being lean and done quite well (there's an obvious example I don't have to name), but in truth, to push at a high level and maintain exceptional leanness is a bad idea. For a host of reasons.

So ... what? All you're telling us is the man's just that much closer to major health concerns.

Still remember his mid/late 90's World's Strongest Man competition. He didn't make it into the finals. He couldn't hang with the big boys.

I met Curtis one time. He drove if I remember a Ford wheel drive with Hawaii plates. Was extremely nice in person, extremely huge and extremely purple.

Why would you say he was a Palumbo? Did he get Palumboism later in his career?

He didn't have a later career. He died.

I noticed that too. Remember, that was 8 years ago when things were a bit more strict around here.
