I used to suffer from severe insomnia for years. Actually started as a kid and only got worse once I started living on my on. During my student years, it want to the point where I couldn't fall asleep before sunrise and I'd get no more than two-three hours a of sleep a day. I got a prescription once. The doc gave me some Atarax. Took one, killed me. Never tried sleeping pills again. Now that my life is more balanced and that I can get over my natural anxieties, I just sleep better. No need for chemical assistance.

Best thing to do is to stop using it ASAP.

Try to work out mentally, what it is that is keeping you from sleeping.

Try medetation, yoga, exercise, cutting out caffiene, stopping any other drugs, using earplugs, exercising harder/longer, eating less sugary foods. You can find a natural solution. Stay away from Ambian.

WTF?  How can you become "addicted" to sleeping pills?  It's not like you get high like it's a pain pill or something. I've taken Ambien before, and I don't get it...  becoming addicted to that would be like becoming addicted to aspirin or rolaids. 

Ambien = GABA agonist. Your body will become addicted whether you want to or not, whether you feel "high" from it or not. GABA system is very sensitive and easily desensitized.

Some feel Ambien has some recreational value. I know people who love taking it and staying up enjoying the effects.

try sleepy time tea with skin milk and honey, I a have the same issue and it was so bad that valum would not help, give you sefl pelnty of tiem to wind down after drinking this tea

i disagree, when i travel i can never sleep without some Ambien and i can take it while i'm traveling and then drop it completely when i get home.

Try switching to something that isn't addictive in the same way. Trazadone, Atarax or Benadryl, or even Seroquel etc. You could alternate between meds that work through different pathways to avoid becoming desensitized to the effects.

i disagree, when i travel i can never sleep without some Ambien and i can take it while i'm traveling and then drop it completely when i get home.

I didn't mean that it's quickly addictive. It also has a very short half-life which makes it less likely to cause dependency very quickly. But Ambien essentially works like Benzo's and these types of drugs are the hardest to stop out of all drugs if you have become dependent. My point was that Ambien "addiction" isn't unheard of.
