lol at the beginning where he's using that plank of wood on top of his belly
Its hardly a bench press if the bar is only going 2 inches down from where it started

I wish they would ban those straight jacket like bench shirts. At some pt is like putting a truck shock on your chest and bouncing the wt off it.
The boards are used in lieu of a power rack for partials at the sticking pt.
Proven long time strength training technique.

Interesting to watch.

I know some of the very best powerlifters in the world. They do get psyched up for a lift and in trianing, but not any of that face slapping that you see in the vid. They tend to do reps slower, and also use stricter form that this guy does. They also don't usually train in benching suits except for the last few weeks leading up to a content (and of course in the contest itself). You would be amazed how much extra weight a good benching shirt can add to a lift.

The vid makes being "hard core" look cool, but a big part of powerlifting is actuallybalancing injury prevention with muscle building, so the "don't try this at home" advice applies to anyone seeing this vid and thinking about adoping a similar style.

Also, the guys I know, are all all round powerlifters - they bench, squat, and deadlift. I suspect some of the guys in this vid are pretty poor squatters and deadlifters, focusing only on benching.

Most of the lifts you see in the vid would not count as a proper lift in a contest. But still, these are huge weights these guys are handling.

Actully alot of people do slap each other in the head... one female actually got hit so hard before her final lift that her jaw broke... she did the lift and never even felt it until after because of the adrenaline(the reason they do it in the first place). Ryan is the strongest benchpresser in the world. He did 1075lbs not too long ago, and you really have no room to talk about his form.

And to the guy with the board comment... They use different sized boards for different sticking points. This is done by pretty much all the world class benchpressers. It's obvious you're not too familiar with powerlifting with a comment like that.

Moving more weight should build bigger muscles.

I've never tried working with the board and mostly have seen powerlifters doing it. Not sure how it would help someone doing reps.

I know well of Ryans sheer power and respect guys like him and Michelson ( raw BP record holder)
The reality that Ryan can do a 700 lb BP withOUT a Bench shirt or wraps. THAT is incredible and blows away what most guys can even dream of pushing. I just don't see the need to use some space age short where EVERY lifter adds wt to the final biggest record lift. It was a thrill to see some of the power champs go at it on stage at the last Arnold expo with rock music and hype, etc
To me the bench shirt is kinda like the extreme drug use in bodybuilding to blow a great physique up to crazy levels.
Ryan is one of the all time greats no matter what shorts are used. That is why I don't see the need for 'em.
The best guys will still be the best guys, shirts or no shirts

Shirts are like track spikes or football cleats. They just let you do it better. If youre not a fan, get on the asszilla train, e hates geared lifting too, and you and he can be buddies.

Hitting people in the face to psych them up is in my view quite pointless (and over time can be harmful). (I also feel the same way about smelling amonia prior to a lift). A slap on the shoulders perhaps yes, but the stuff with the face slapping really just makes powerlifting look like a stupid sport (although antics like that and guys shouting etc are always fun to watch). I know some amazing lifters who are extremely calm. They have no need for shouting etc.

I persoanally do kind of a yelp sound during the most expolsive part of the lift, and sometimes a kind of a growl on a really heavy squat I am trying to squeeze up, but don't see any need to do much of a show and antics before my lift (although others shouting at me before a lift helps). What I like doing is getting up their really calmly, focussed, confident, with all my energy directed towards the lift.

Yeah I do pretty much the same. If i'm doing bench i'll usually just sit there and look at the floor while visually myself repping the weight. Then I do it.

Hmmm, your post seems to contradict your statement about knowing the best powerlifters in the world.  Who do you know?

Everyone is different.  Some lifters compete very calmly while others really thrive on getting slapped etc.  I don't need anyone to slap me to get up for a big lift, but it doesn't bother me that others do.
