Author Topic: What is the worst "Accident" that has happened to you while lifting weights?  (Read 12491 times)

I had a shit gym in my basement when I was 16 and was ready to do squats. When I picked up the weights on my shoulders the fucking squat rack fell over.  it was this York piece of crap stand.  I'm now standing with 200 pound ( 4 50 pound cement filled weights in that plastic shell )  on my shoulders and no where to drop it.  The floors were cement so if I just dropped the weights I could have cracked the floor and the weights, then my dad would have beat my ass if I ruined the floor.  So I walked around to the bench with the weight still sitting on my should and slowly sat down.  I then let the weights drop onto the bench.  The biggest fucking crash I ever heard.  The bar bent right in the middle. It was a crap 1 inch bar.  It was the only barbell I had at the time.

Kind of sucked.  My whole family ran into the basement to see what caused that noise and then they all started yelling at me.  LOL.

I reckon we've all seen this in the gym:

Guy doing bench press, gets up from his last set, pulls off the plates on one side, then gets his head nearly taken off as the bar flies up from the weights still on the other end. ::)

Two that I can think of:

1) Losing control of a 185lbs barbell during a push press and having the bar smack me on the nose. I was really young.

2) Having the cable break on a cheap lat pulldown machine while doing tricep pushdowns with a jerry rigged 175lbs. I remember hearing the cable snap, the whish as it moved through the pulleys, and thinking "holy s#@t, I'm going to lose an eye". That did'nt happen, but I got a nice cut and rope burn from mid- pec to jaw bone.

I have found that up to 2 45's on one side shouldn't cause a problem

Doing calf raises in the smith machine, tought I racked it and relaxed.. BOOM down to the floor, If I would have been 6+ foot, I would probably have broken my back  ;D

I was 21 and was coming back to lift after 7 months off.  I got 135 stuck on my chest benching on the 7th rep and had to roll it off.  It was embarrassing.   ;D

Finally!  I built a great gym with a body solid power rack, bench, lat pulldown, rows etc...  Over the last few years I've been buying piece by piece off of craigslist.  I still want a leg press sled but no one seems to have one to sell.

I hate going to commercial gyms.  I love waking up, having a coffee and then being able to workout at home without getting in my car and driving to a crowded stinky gym.

Another dumb mistake was the goose egg I got on my head from skull crushers.  When I started lifting I used to see these big fuckers put a towel on their foreheads and bring the weight all the way down and touch it.  I tried it and half way through the weight came down a little too fast and smack.  That shit hurt.

the worst I've ever seen was this little juice monkey.  The kid was in his teens, obviously juicing it.  he was doing seated rows with the pin at the bottom of the stack.  All of a sudden there was this SNAP!  the cable broke, this kid did a double flip backwards into a weight stack.  He was knocked right out.  They had to call the ambulance and everything. Real nasty accident for sure.

I haven't really had any, but a couple of times I have ALMOST been crushed under the bench press cuz of not using a spotter
...good thing the benches in my gym have powerrack designs  ;D



good thing it was 95lbs also

I have done silly things. Nothing too major.

Cleaned 200lbs before off ground and done it fast i lost balance stumbling back off teh platform 10' across the gym. Another 1 or 2 steps i would have tripped up. Funny but.

Hit jaw on a standing military press with teh bar lol.

Nipped dickskin when doing weighted dips before

something similar happened to me after a long lay off.

i was in a rugby club - real monsters all around, etc

i was trying out the bench ( in a safety cage - thankfully) to see how it felt after the lay off - i started with 1 45lb plate each side, did around 10 then failed, it was on my chest and i simply did not have an ounce of strength left, i tried bouncing it off, but each bounce got smaller and smaller. The whole time i'm doing this, 2 monsters were just sitting watching me, not saying a thing. i was too embarassed and prideful to ask for help, so i evenutually just sat the bar on my chest, after around 30 sec i tried to bounce it again, and it didn't move an inch, finally one of the monsters asked if i needed a hand, i sheepishly said if you don't mind - he lifted it with one hand and wasn't even looking at the bar  :-[

i walked out as fast as i could, and still havn't returned  :(

one day though, one day i will go back and show him  ;D

passed kidney stones deadlifting 400 lbs...thought I ruptured something inside hahahaha ...

later that day I passed them completely ( or all of them ) as I was laying on my tennis club's front lawn grimacing inpain and people were starring at me as I was holding 2 icecreams ...
