Deadlifting questions
« on: November 24, 2008, 12:24:40 PM »
Hello ppl i been training for over a year and altho i always had problems maintainig diet (i cant eat that much) i've managed to gain 14 pounds with my waiste staying the same pretty much!

I been doing things the old school way (Squats, deadlifts, military press etc all with free-weights in my shed) i feel great and so much stronger but i've always had one problem...

When i deadlift i've never been certain of my form and its lead me to stay with a lightweight (80 kg/ 175lbs) however this is not a form question its much more specific...

The question is, where should i expect to ache the next day after training deadlifts?

Sometimes after i've gone heavier i've had an ache either side of my spine in the lower back/middle back region and also in the glutes (is this good?) but i wonder if the ache either side of my spine is the muscle soreness or joint/disk soreness?

I know this seems like a stupid question but magazine articles have gotten me super paranoid about lower back/spinal erectae problems and i dont wanna stop doing the deadlift cos i get a freakish high off of em cos its so demanding, any info or experiences on post training ache with this exercise is massively appeciated,

peace

I tend to get the most soreness in my hamstrings, glutes, and if I keep my shoulders back at the top of the movement, in my traps.  I've never really had a lot of soreness in my lower back, sometimes a little in the mid/upper central area.  Although take my advice with a pinch of salt as I can't deadlift at the moment due to lower back problems!!!

Haha cool, i tend to train dealifts before squats (and often after lunges) so its extra confusing as all three exercises involve so many of the same muscles, i'm thinking of just having a deadlift-only day with like ten sets of em to see where it targets on its own?

Good luck with the lower back recoup man! :-\

I've quit doing deadlifts altogether because my lower back hurts too much when training it (and it's not good pain either).

i pretty much get sore all over, not so much in my lower back unless i havent done them in a while but your soreness sounds about right to me. Either side of your spine, rhomboids, traps probably are all going to be sore some more than others. Great exercise if your trying to add size and strength I would recommend against the 10 sets which would be a marathon and go 3 or 4 sets of lower reps more weight.
