healthy food
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:49:48 PM »
im wondering what people classify as 'healthy food'... and why ?

i dont care to much about my own helth, but i have a nephew and i see what he eats and it bothers me to think at a young age he could be/is damaging his health with the foods he eats... so i started to think of foods to suggest to his mom (my sister [well, sort of half sister but not really too hard to explain LOL])... and i got to thinking what is actually 'healthy'

the first thing i thought of... was a food that is devoid of 'negatives'... a food that doesnt have any thing "unhealthy" about it... \

the next thing i thought of... was a a food that has essential nutrients.. essential fats and essential amino acids

the next thing i thought of...was a food that contained plenty of vitmains minerals antidioxidants and phytonutrients

the next thing i though of... was a food that is alkaline and not acidic

next thing i though of... was a food that is anti inflammatory and not pro inflamatory

the next thing i thought of was fiber

so taking all these into consideration, i came up with a list of foods that i think are rthe only foods that can be qualified as 'healthy'... = vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, soy.

im wondering what people classify as 'healthy food'... and why ?

I think there's too many opinions out there to just a definitive answer.

well what do you consider processed food?

and also..; ive come to a new point of view regarding animal protein.. highly acidic and doesnt contribute much in the way of vitamins minerals antidioxidants phytonutrients... yes it does have amino acids (essentital for life)..but one can get all the amino acids necessary from soy and by combining incomplete proteins found in veggies legumes and nuts..

Foods with additives and preservatives. Try shopping at Whole Foods, expensive but great quality. So you are giving up red meat? Have you been having ill affects from eating it?

no i dont care much about health...

You should care about your health. Try enjoying life when you feel like shit or end up with some medical disorder. Life truly sucks if you're unhealthy.

Well, to me - healthy means as natural as possible - not chemical additives. This is a rarity nowadays, as mostly anything is sprayed, colored, etc...
Of course, healthy is when its fresh, lean, etc and most likely home cooked....not fried, take-away junk...
It is healthy if it gives you balanced set of nutrients that your body requires.

Chicken, beef etc
Vegies, fruit, salads
Nuts, olive oil, advo.

Keep it simple. The more dull the packageing the better!

i think there is a difference between 'healthy' and 'not unhealthy'.

when i did not mention animal protein as healthy, i didnt do so based on the acidic nature of meat.  however amino acids are very healthy and so are the fats found in *some* meats.  and because there are other options for amino acids (soy and/or combining two incomplete sources), without getting the acidic ph involved wth meat, i would cal meat 'healthy'. however since its not really realistic to expect people t eat enough soy and combinatins of incomplete amino acids to get a gram per pound of body weight of protein per day, then i think its probably okay to label meat as 'healthy', since i think its more important to meet base nutritional demands than to worry about acidic ph when you can offset that ph by eating your veggies and fruits (which you should be doing anyways - if your looking for healthy body)

well basically like i said, i was thinking about what would be healthy for my nephew... and i know one thing that can be unhealthy , and is a result mainly of diet (or overtraining) is having an acidic ph... and having an alkaliine ph keeps all body processes going smoothly.. so when creating a list of healthy foods i figure its best to make sure the foods create a alkaline ph...

the body compartments have different acid alkaline values but 7.4 is the average value of the extracellular fluid. However alkalosis is a condition and is not healthy, either is acidosis. You can change acid alkaline levels faster with breathing techniques anyhow. The body also has buffers like sodium bicarbonate from the pancreas which will will dilute overly acidic foods. I wouldnt worry to much about it.

Green tea
berries
almonds
fresh meat
cold water fish
broccoli
veggies,fruits
flax seed

broccoli, berries and green tea (or white) is my choice for the best foods.

I would say it's pretty much common sense what you class as "healthy food". fruits, vegetables, moderate amounts of lean meat and poultry, grains, cereals, olive oils, low fat milk, etc. Anything that's not processed or containing excessive amounts of fat and refined sugars.
