Shawn Ray 94 vs. 95
« on: November 26, 2008, 10:58:54 PM »
Everybody keeps saying that Shawn Ray had presented his best at Mr. O. 94 when he placed 2nd and deserved to beat Yates while he was a little off at Mr. O. 95 so placed 4th.. I watched the videos of both contests and always feel that Shawn was the same.. Does anyone knows his weight at each contest of the 2??..

At 18 Ray was way ahead of most.

At 22 he was a pro, and put on maybe 15lbs of quality proportionate muscle throughout career. The waistline stayed the same!

As someone else said, near perfect, but not good enough for the monsters of his day - according to judges.

2 of my other favorites, Labrada & Gaspari also came close but no cigar.

thing with shaun is, he was fucked either way,, with him bein short, anymore size would have spoilt the thing he had goin for him with his shape, would of just looked more stumpy.......

still a class act, and sorely missed along with the rest of the 90's golden age

I think he was around 205 as usual in both contests. Shawn always showed up in great conditioning (barring a couple of instances like the 96 AC), but he never really improved on his shape and muscularity - he was nearly the same year after year. And he was far from perfect - short, narrow and weak front & rear lat spreads, not to mention his blocky legs, although I'm just nitpicking here.

Shawn always cried foul, saying the judges were overlooking him cause he wasn't a big guy, but the judges always gave him his due and put him in the top 4 in most of his Olympias. He was just not physically dominant due to his height and (lack of) size, not to mention he competed at a time when the quality of competition was at it's best.

He didn't change that much over those years.  Pound for pound maybe a potential o winner.

Very short though.  I think height plays a part in the judges decision making.

Tall equals dominant and impressive.
Short equals insecure and insignificant

That is, in the eyes of many judges.   Sad but true.

The chiuaua was simply not big enough or masculine enough to win a show. He was an overrated little yapper. He also had a limit for size , he tried to get big don't believe him that he didnt. A small man with a bad nature and always he was dwarfed by the large and normal sized athletes

Shawn Ray:

small

 1. not large as compared with others of the same kind

 2. of minor importance, moment, weight, or consequence.

 3.  characterized by or indicative of littleness of mind or character; mean-spirited; petty: a small, miserly man

I wouldn't call taking 2nd place to Dorian's fully deserved first place (by Shawn's own admission) 'smoking' Yates, Hulkster.
