WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?
« on: December 12, 2008, 11:00:25 AM »
I see alot of questions on here regarding training (duh, it's the training Q&A). But you before you ask the question, tell us what your goals are ex; Hypertrophy, power, strength, is for a sport? If you want better of more informative answers it's always best to state your goals.

Overall, just to be in the gym.  Obviously I would like to improve or at least maintain what I have already.  My goals tend to change every other month or so.

I do not want to advance to any more bwt, muscular or other wise. I do want to see  increases in power in my PB.  So far, there have been. Steady progress is the prime goal. At this point in training,  the less time spent working out, in a training session, the more I gain in muscular and strength gains. Less really is more.

Work with athletes who gain an average of 8 to 15 lbs of prime lean muscular mass within a month to 6 weeks. They have too, with regards to their sports. All gains confirmed by a Cal state university sports lab. Becomes more of the norm than the unusual for those types of muscle mass gains with the men (and a few women). This is part of my job to see to it that their goals are meant. In a way, so are mine. Good Luck.

Setting goals instills the power of belief, belief that you WILL achieve something. What this does is drives you psychologically and prepares you neurologically to achieve, and believe it or not achieving goals has much to do with your thinking. Expectation goes a long ways and if you set your goal even higher than you'd normally expect to achieve, you will achieve even more than you would had you been more "realistic." "Realistic" is often synonymous with "pessimistic" because it is belief that is the driving force behind achievement.  ;)

Size.  I could care less if I could lift anything heavier than a fork as long as I look big.

I used to have this attitude for a long time and trained with hypertrophy in mind.  I did manage to put on quite a bit of size this way but eventually stalled.  Over the past year I have been focusing on compound movements, going heavy (4-7 reps) with low volume and working out 2-3 times per week maximum.  My goal is to get stronger and I monitor my progress with a training log.  As you might expect, I have never been bigger or stronger in my life.

Hypertrophy training is fine but I think you should have a quite a bit of strength in the big lifts first..

Well said.  While I may not care much about strength I do realize that in order to get bigger one must also get stronger.

Same here.

But i have recentlt changed my training style from typical hypertrophy training to more of a "power-building" style of training.

Pretty much just a reduction in volume and keeping the reps between 6-8, rather than 10-12 or whatever. Focus on compounds and just do a bit of isolation work. I like it. Strength is going up, size too and training is more fun now.
No doubt about it...

4 plate bench
5 plate squat
6 plate pull

as long as i don't have a 40+ inch waist when it happens, i'll be damn satisfied.
