Great gripping exercise. People have done that with a bowling ball also. 

$74.95 for a wrist roller? As Wes suggest, make one. Get a dowel  (buy a couple of sizes, like extra thick to thin). Cut to length, add a eye screw & short length of light rope. Attach BB plate and roll away. Can also stand on a bench, box, etc with a longer rope for more of a challenge. Do over and under handed. Will burn like fire at first.

Want something even cheaper for the grip than hold a full sheet of newspaper at the corner and just begin wadding it up with your fingers. Squeezing hard all the time until the full sheet is a tight ball in your hand. Good Luck.
