Best book on Nutrution and meals
« on: January 05, 2009, 01:28:25 PM »
What is the Best book on Nutrution and meals? I have the best book on bodybuilding; Arnolds Encyclopedia of Modern day Bodybuilding but has anyone read any books on nutrution other then in college. I thought about looking at some of Chris Acetos books but would like some input before i start choosing which one would be the "best" one.

get yoruself a book for students that explains basic metabolism and metabolic hormones and such. thats better than any nutrition book youll ever get. once you understand those basic ideas, then you can devise your ow nutrition plan based on what you would like to do.

Chris Arceto books:

Understanding Bodybuilding Nutrition and Training..... $19.95 (Amazon.com)
Everything You Need to Know About Fat Loss .............$19.95 (Amazon.com)
Championship Bodybuilding ........................ ............ $24.35 (Amazon.com)

Might even be less expensive if you did a search on eBay.com

Anyone ever get a chance to read "Better Than Steroids" and care to elaborate on what those substances are? Book photo shown below:

While we are on this subject, would anyone who has gone through a couple of pre-contest-stage diets, care to elaborate on what type of diet works best for an ultimate contest condition?

Many years ago one of the top and most respected bodybuilders/gym owner would recommend that any new gym member reduce his/her body-fat percentage to a relatively low figure (I forget that exact percentage) before starting a strict pre-contest routine, so most of the gym members  I knew would reduce their daily caloric intake to approximately 1,500 and increase their aerobic activity to reduce their bodyfat. Once that desired level was achieved, then and only then would he recommend a dedicated bodybuilding program.

Aerobic activity consisted of a minimum of 40 minutes with a heart rate level within the "fat burning realm" which depended on the trainee's age.

This is all old stuff so any new thoughts on the subject matter would be appreciated .... How to Lose Body-fat and Gain Ripped Muscle Mass Through Diet and Exercise in the Shortest Time Possible - to put it in a nut-shell.

Has anyone else noticed that almost all diet books can be reduced to approximately 1/20 their size and still present the material that is important for the reader?  A good majority of these books can be summed up in the following words, "EAT LESS, EXERCISE MORE!", but no one would spend $20+ for a one page book.

Thanks, S

Arnold's encyclopedia is out of date from a nutritional standpoint.

If there is a newer/revised edition, I'd doubt he'd have any involvement in it's content.

if you are in  college like i a - then go into the college library and look at your listing and find a section for health or medicine. there should be a ton of good instructional books there.

or try your public library.

Arnold book was never the "best" of anything and various people wrote his chapters for him. As  an Ok addition  to your library, it's fine. It's far from the authority on the topic.

There are far too many good strength coaches out there, such as Poliquin, Simmons, King, Staley, etc, etc. There are far too many real authorities on nutrition out there, Aceto, yours truly, Berardi, Lyle M, etc, etc, and far too many real authorities on supps and drugs, to ever consider Arnolds book the "best" on any of it.

It's not a bad beginners book, but that's about it. As for recipes, here's a list of reports (read free sh%t), one of which is a recipe ebook. Titles are:

Fat Loss Tips Tricks & Techniques

Supplement Company Secrets

The Perfect Rep

Creatine Report

Tasty Healthy Recipes

Some very decent info can be had from them, and they are the right price!

Well said, Brink. You know this history stuff as well as anyone. Thanks.

What is your opinion on Pearl's book?

And how do you feel about the business of Personal Trainers. Back in the day "personal trainers" were anyone in the gym who had actually "gotten it done" and offered their advice for free when asked.

Now-a-days PT's appear to make big bucks teaching nonsense.

Am I wrong in this regards?

Basic old school info and he's a vegetarian now. If training for vegetarians interest you, I guess it's OK.

The golden days of being a PT are long gone. Was a fun job you could make decent $$$ at. Gyms/clubs got greedy, etc, and it's more a grind for some phys Ed major working their way through school or what ever now. I honestly pay no attention to PTs these days, so I don't know what they do. The few we have where I train seem to range from pretty good to generic/lame.

The recent Carlton Colker book is very good for nutritional info - "Extreme Muscle Enhancement" it's called.
