Obama's particular race doesn't matter per se, only the given that he's a non-caucasian. It's an historic event, for the first time a non-caucasian has been elected president. The relevance of this fact is that the USA have elected a person that 50 years ago would have been considered a 2nd class citizen, a lesser human even. It's a marker of progress.
what this will bring in the end, we can not know, but it will not depend on his race.
as an analogy: the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki where unthinkable 5 years prior, such weapons were deemed beyond immoral. We can question whether they were better not dropped, but prolonging the war... yada yada yada... after the bombs the face of warfare and international politics had changed drastically, for good or for worse (I'd argue for worse, but that's another matter). Obama is like the bombs: a change 'agent', America won't be the same after this election, hopefully for the better.
