10% of the country gets them. And that number is climbing.

I could really go for a free $200 worth of steak and Oreos each month.

Anyone have a link to the paperwork? I'd like to get started next month. Thanks in advance.

My grandma used to use em' when she was alive. I used to go with her to the supermarket and use em. Needless to say they had to call the manager every time and whatnot to verify and write your name on a list. It's a process everytime. It's not like a second currency where u just hand to the cashier and go about your business

I'm waving the bullshit flag on this one.

The local market in my town always has piles of mexicans in it, and 90%+ pay with foodstamps. There is no list or verification. Most of the time they don't even prevent them from using them on alcohol and ice cream and energy drinks.

It IS like a second currency. Just like using cold, hard cash...... only it's all free.

You get a card just like a credit card now. It's called EBT, there are no "stamps" anymore. You can't buy alcohol or cigs, but everything else is free game.

where do u live? here in ny most small market places dont even take them foodstamps.

No offense dude,

I live in Cali, and you can get anything with foodstamps here. They use those EBT cards like grab is talking about too, but the illegals use actual papers every time. In alot of towns all the stores take them, even 7-11 type convenience stores. Most of their clientele uses them.

BTW, to get food stamps (or WIC) you don't have to actually PROOVE anything. They don't validate anything in California.

you can't buy red bull with food stamps.

you use a little EFT/checkcard. It just automatically pays for everything eligible, and then you have to pay cash or use your other check card for the non-foods.

You should only be able to use food stamps for certain items. If our tax $ is feeding people in dire straits then we have a right to restrict certain items (ie, high cost food, expensive brands when generics are available, cigarettes, alcohol, etc).

I've seen people use food assistance without any issue at grocery stores.

The new democratic economic stimulus plan includes plenty of $ for increasing food stamp provisions, so 240 perhaps you'll get your wish.

I think reality has really hit this week. We feel what its like to have unbalanced power in government. This stimulus, with all its extras, should absolutely not pass. Even with 100% no votes by republicans, the bill passed fairly easily because of the lopsided control.

Obama talked about compromise and consessions, but he only removed 1 out of many bullshit pork items in the bill that the dems put in. Obama needs to preside over a more balance of power in the congress. I think he may work with repubs but its not really necessary with this lopsided gov.

I'm really upset about this. i don't think people understand the deficit consequences. They will raise taxes to offset some of this when the economy improves...or the interest on our national deficit will kill us.

Exactly, I don't understand deficit spending outside of a war or something lifethreatening like that. I don't understand our government. You don't spend what you don't have, thats why we have budgets. Many states have done this and are all requesting federal $. This federal bailout will increase our national deficit to nearly 11 trillion dollars...we don't even understand that amount of $, but we do have to pay the interest on it! Eliminating our debt eliminates the interest payments which alone is a huge federal yearly expense...for nothing.

240, the key is not to overspend and not have an 11 trillion dollar deficit. We are continuing to go in the wrong direction. Bush is certainly partly to blame but the spending has really increased and the economy taking a greater dive in 2006, when we had a republican president who did not act like a conservative and the democrats took over the congress.

Also, everyone above the poverty line should pay taxes, whatever the %. That way whenever the gov wants to overspend or raise taxes, everyone has a stake in it and everyone should balance the cost vs benefit to the nation.

the $ will be spent regardless. We can agree on that much, right?

Both the D's and R's want it. R's prefer it be tax breaks that are much larger, as Bush employed. Dems prefer social programs which do employ a lot of ppl (and unemployment is 11-12% today).

if they're going to give anyone the $, I'd say give it to the people who need jobs, not the people with jobs earning 200k who already have jobs. IMO they've been hooked up for 8 straight years, and we know that has killed the middle class.

Don't worry though.. .in 8 years, the pendulum will swing. The upper middle class will be healthy again, and people will vote a repub in, in 2016 or 2020. He'll hook up the rich like Reagan and Bush did, and the cycle will continue.

Have u ever worked for a poor person...do poor people create jobs, build wealth, create industry. A massive chunk of the bill is to bail out poor people or fund lib wish projects. How much can be tied to stimulating the economy? Sending cash to the NEA does nothing for anybody.
