I have stocked up plenty of food in the past few weeks. California will be the first state to watch for riots with the recent IOU thing on income tax refunds and the stopping of welfare cheques. I got a new shotgun and cleared out the gun shop inventory of buckshot.

I didn't vote OBAMA because I don't like paying for all the freeloaders and baby machines that won't work...but as far as taxes go it can't get much worse for me than it was with Bush. I am single with no kids and I get raped on taxes. I made $51,000 in 2008 and paid in $14,000 in taxes. So far this year I have made $4,304 and have paid $1098 in taxes.It would be more but I have a health savings acount that is funded with pre tax dollars and I have 6% put in my 401 k. I always get back about the same amount each yearno mater what I made. It is always around $1300.00 most ever was $1700..meanwhile a coworker that has 3 kids and a wife that does not work only paid in $8000 all year and he still gets several thousand on his refund. I could understand him geting more on his check each week because he claims dependants but why does he still get a big refund? He basically pays almost no taxes.He makes a little over $1 less per hour than I do and brings home way more per week than I do.

Every time I get a raise my check barely reflects it.

Back when Clinton was in Office I averaged about $40 k per year and usually paid in $6-7,000 and still got back around $1300 at refund time.

Would someone who understands our tax system explain to me why I have to pay in so much and how he can get a large refund and still pay in so little. FYI he says he claims the 3 kids all year and then his wife and himself at the end of the year. If taxes are going to increase like many people fear then I will really be screwed. $:-\$

Getting a refund is a terrible idea. You are overpaying your taxes.

Well, I claim single no dependants and then I claim myself at the end of the year. If I claim myself during the year I'd probably end up owing them. The upside would be I could be earning interest on the money if I kept it in savings but that's a big if.

Even still...if I claimed myself all year and DIDN'T have to pay at the end of the year,I still would be paying in $12,000 plus vs his $8000(actually 2 or 3,000 because he says he usually gets back 5 or 6 thousand)

His point is well taken, we pay too many taxes in this country already. Any discussion of raising taxes (which will come after the economy is stabilized some...to offset this massive enormous spending bill) is ludicrous. Between federal, state, medicare, FICA, local, property and sales taxes, most of us are giving 30-50% back to the government. Thats far too high. We must make them cut spending.

Just did my business taxes and its just horrible. Businesses get double taxed and the rate is insane.

You're preaching to the choir. We had a local "assessor" come in and estimate a value on our office for us to pay the property taxes.(furniture, computers, filing cabinets, etc.) The damn property taxes were more than what we paid for the desks and equipment 3 years ago!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT THE FUCK!!!!! I honestly despise our government.

Not to mention I'm a single person with no kids and no matter what I make I get the same every year back from the government. I have been getting screwed since I started receiving a paycheck.

333...speak on this as a small business owner. Did they rape you on your property taxes? I swear the property tax is double taxation, our office has been paid for for three years now. Why do we pay taxes on something we OWN?

Some states, CT for example charge a property tax every year on items you discussed. However, you are supposed to be able to depreciate these things over time.
