Is there such a thing as free will?
« on: February 11, 2009, 02:59:44 AM »
Or are our thoughts and decisions just formed by a bunch of neurons who have been linked whatever happened in the past.

If there is not, then we (or any living thing for that matter) don't have a REAL choice, because it was already determined what we would choose. Thinking further on that, whatever happens now or in the future is already laid out.

From a scientific viewpoint, this deterministic view makes perfect sense. However somehow i don't want to believe this.
I never really thought much about religious/philosofical questions but this one is really bugging me.

Any insights/thoughts?

No. Free will is an illusion. All things have previous causes, including our own thoughts. All actions we take or thoughts we make can be traced back to a time before we were even born. It's all predetermined by the laws of physics.

That's means you feel like you are a robot?. Just asking.

So, it won't matter if I do what my emotions dictate?. Can I walk in front of buses? Why do they put warning label's on products?. Again, curious to know how physics or rather predetermined by physics, explains this.

I don't know what robots feel like, so I can't say. Especially since robots that feel things don't exist yet.

Whatever you do, that was predetermined by basic laws of physics and causation.

With what you know about robots, at present, would you like to be one?

Who come up with the "laws" of physics. It's hard to fathom that they (laws) could have just happened by chance.

I would like to have mechanical parts and be a "Cyborg". Obviously some sort of high technology cyborg to fix a lot of problems associated with being human.

Would I want to be a robot totally mechanical? If given the chance to be human or robot, not already being who I am now, I would choose a high tech robot obviously.

I don't know. Unlikely a "who" but rather a "what". "What caused the laws of physics to exist?" I don't know.

Did it happen by "chance" It depends on how you define chance, but I'm not sure.

A lot of things are hard or impossible to fathom for a lot of people, but that doesn't mean anything except that humans aren't very capable of imagining things. Argument from incredulity.

That would mean, you would have to answer to the one that created you. Your existence would still be limited to that creator. Besides, what if you were a perfect human, what would be your answer then? Just asking, not challenging.  :)

Whatever "it" is, do you agree "it" took intelligence?

Lack of intelligence, such as young boy receiving his first kiss. *LOL*. J/K

I guess that is relative, there are a lot of artist, musicians, and the like that would disagree. Those folks are fairly imaginable.

Even a high tech robot could go beyond his creator. Given enough technology and sophistication, this robot could be stronger, faster, tougher, smarter than its creator. Surpassing its creator in all ways.

This is where all of the sci fi stories come from where robots take over the world because they were made smarter than people.

No. Intelligence, as far as we know, is something that evolved much later in the universe. Intelligence is a result of the laws of physics, not the other way around. That's just how things are.

They are creative. But try to get them to wrap their heads around some of the things dealing with string theory and the like and they will be at a loss.
