They are only a waste in a small town. All independants get taken over by franchised or corporates gyms in a medium to large city. There will always be a niche for the small gym but that is very small. The thing that is killing gyms like gold's is the outrageous fees now and monthly spiffs. When I had it, it was a flat fee of $12,000 a year. If you are a gym owner and can't afford that then you really shouldn't be in business. I have only lived in Vacation destinations throughout my life so having a franchised gym is something very advantageous. We made anywhere from $2,000 to $8,000 a day from traveling members at Gold's in Honolulu. People spends lots of money on Gold's Gym brandname items. Nobody spends on an independants brandname.

Your gym is not the norm. It is a industry fact that single owned gyms and smaller facilities do not survive the franchised or corporate gyms. It is great you can survive them. Is your gym a typical gym or do you specialize in something.

Theres three non corporate gyms just in SE Portland that are going great and we have more corporate gyms per capita than anyone, its not hard to beat a corporate gym.

Like the clueless competitor kind of thing? I don't get the whole thing, that thing has no right to step foot on a bodybuilding stage.
