Back in the 90's I remember hearing about people needing to get really heavy to put on muscle...(I disagree)
Lee Priest, Dennis James, Nasser, and Yates really over did it.

Ronnie kind of did it but he competed at 290+ so going to 310 is really not going up that much.

I'm not saying they have to train naturally but a person like Kai that went up to 302 in the offseason and competed in the 250s is putting on too much weight.  It makes it that much harder to diet it off...

Some guys do overdo it no doubt ala trey brewer . . . but I don't think any of the guys you mentioned got "too heavy" in the offseason. Except maybe Priest in that 1 muscletech shoot where he was plain fat. Boatloads of test and other anabolics plus GH will make you look extrememly soft when eating tons of food.

Yes but when you do this every year and come in the same weight every year, what is the point?

charles glass made a greta point one time..... a guy asked him why he kept dieting down to the same bodyweight for a contest, when he kept get bigger in the offseason. charles told the guy this happens alot to guys because they keep the same contest diet from year to year, not increasing protein or calories to compensate for an increase in muscloe mass.  makes sense to me.

Ditto that, as long as it is within the competitors capabilities to come in peeled then eat away IMO.  In order to reach the massive amount of calories needed to keep growing at a high bodyweight you will have to eat some junk foods - which will inevitably cause an increase in bf levels.

Cause nobody can stay on a clean diet year round, they are people too, they crave foods and they like to eat good food, simple as that.

You don't have to.  Going 40+ lbs over your contest weight is a little much ya think?

Kai was closer to 270lbs at the Arnold, not 255 as LT suggested.  Part of the 40+ lbs over contest weight is water... 40lbs. over 14-16wks. of dieting isn't too much..  But between now and the Olympia, it would be wise to stay between 15-20lbs..

Also have to take into account is depleted glycogen levels from dieting and full glycogen in the offseason. for such a big guy like 250lbs + that difference alone can be 20lbs

Kai weighed 257 for the Arnold. Kai even said so himself. Read the other reports. LT is more accurate with judging the actual weight of guys than many speculators. He wasn't 270.
