Taking it literally means spanking your kid.  It didn't say "belt" because they didn't wear them when the verse was written.

Then the word "rod" shouldn't have been in the sentence.

That's your opinion.  Like I said, discipline is subjective.  You think it's abuse.  I don't.  Many other parents don't either.

It's not the "rod".  My point is that if the word rod wasn't meant to be taking literally it wouldn't have been in the sentence.  They would have wrote similar to the way i wrote it earlier.

Well, where I stand is: we cannot know for certain and I think it improbable there was a historical Jesus; there may have been but we will never know.

And I think the dating for the Schroud is still controversial.

My bad...German interferrence.

The only reason I mentioned it was because Ozmo said Loco's English was crap. I disagree. Moreover that was spelling; the grammar was toally off there and once again was about Loco.

Grammar is one thing.  Understanding what someone is trying to say to you is another.  And also, pretending that you don't understand when you do, is something else also.

If you understood what i wrote, you'd see i wasn't criticizing his grammar.   ;) ;D

His grammar is fine.

BTW:   insert the word "it"

I think beating a kid with a rod would surely earn a visit from CPS.

The CPS prolly doesn't follow God's law either. Even the Govs. of the world don't. Why would the CPS? :)

What does CPS following "gods" laws have to do with anything?  CPS is there to protect children from abuse.  Using a rod on a child would probably earn a visit by CPS.

End of story.

I wouldn't heed the CPS' guidelines on child rearing over God's, that's all.  :)

I don't either.  Don't even know what CPS's guidelines are nor do i care.  However, if a parent is beating their kids with a rod, I do care that it is stopped because it is child abuse.

He who reproves a scoffer gets shame for himself,
And he who rebukes a wicked man gets himself a blemish.
Do not reprove a scoffer, lest he hate you;
Rebuke a wise man, and he will love you.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser;
Teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.

Proverbs 9:7-9

Does this mean don't argue with dummies?   :D

In the multitude of words sin is not lacking,
But he who restrains his lips is wise.
Proverbs 10:19

A talebearer reveals secrets,
But he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter.
Proverbs 11:13

He who guards his mouth preserves his life,
But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction.
Proverbs 13:3

He who has knowledge spares his words,
And a man of understanding is of a calm spirit.
Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace;
When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.
Proverbs 17:27-28

Translation:  shut the heck up.   :D

Goes back to an earlier post of mine:

A fool's lips enter into contention, and his mouth calleth for strokes. (Prov 18:6 KJV)

Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished,
But he who gathers by labor will increase.
Proverbs 13:11

He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed.
Proverbs 13:20

Go from the presence of a foolish man,
When you do not perceive in him the lips of knowledge.
Proverbs 14:7

He who is quick tempered acts foolishly.
Proverbs 14:17

He who is slow to wrath has great understanding,
But who is impulsive exalts folly.
Proverbs 14:29

A soft answer turns away wrath,
But a harsh word stirs up anger.
Proverbs 15:1

A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance,
But by sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.
Proverbs 15:13

Better is a dinner of herbs where love is,
Than a fatted calf with hatred.
Proverbs 15:17

The ear that hears reproof of life
Will abide among the wise.
He who disdains instruction despises his own soul.
But he who heeds reproof gets understanding.
The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom,
And before honor is humility.
Proverbs 15:31-33

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

The key to understanding Proverbs is to realize that they are general principals.  Some people think that certain proverbs contradict one another, such as Prov 26:4 vs Prov 26:5

Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him.

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit.

But actually, these are more of a paradox (opposite but equal truth) than a contradiction.  Kind of like walking the line between He who hesitates is lost and Look before you leap.

I wrestle with this one.  You have to know when to respond to foolishness and when to simply shut up.  Tough to draw the line sometimes.
