The most controversial of Hany's Sandows is the '90 against Labrada. '89 also could or should have gone to Labrada but it wasn't as clear. I've never seen the picture of '87 but I've heard a lot of people sayin' that Gaspari should have won. So that's five clear wins. Same could be said for Arnold, Yates, Coleman or Zane BTW.

i have all the 8 contests he won on my computer and he was always the clear winner.. yes in 1990 (the drug tested show) he was not full as his normal.. I shall watch it again to see if labrada really deserved to win ;D

While his most controversial was 90 (they drug tested that year), Haney still deserved to win- same in 89.

87 in Gotenberg Haney won by a country mile. Gaspari was the best he ever looked at that show and posed to a song sung by his brother called destiny, however Haney clearly won.

Is this the only pic of Yates ever being beaten in a back pose?
Haney made him look like an amatuer

As good as gaspari was, i don't see him beating Haney. Haney has a few "weaknesses" so to say, arms and quads (at least thatyear) relatively small. But Gaspari has flaws also. Labrada on the other hand brings something totally different from the others. His overall shape is fantastic though no individual part strikes you as being spectacular. Proportions are out of this world.

I agree with you that Labradas proportions are fantastic, its just when Haney stood next to him he was just to small (176lbs against 240lbs.) Haney just overwhelmed him.

Haney is awesome. He's got to have one of the best characters of any Mr. O. I think he was/is a great spokesperson for the sport.

I think he is overrated though. Good for a few O titles.....but not 8 of them.

That's part of why he doesn't get talked about as much, he was good but not great; his physique wasn't spectacular and had major balance issues. He lucked out in terms of his competition he faced then, in getting 8 titles. The Larry Holmes of BB.

Being a good spokesman for the "sport" was a big advantage, Weider had a history of favoring this against guys who might've been physically better, like Fox for example who clearly had better balance and more overall size, or Padilla or Robinson, who he looked up to. Against a prime condition Yates or Coleman obviously he loses those too.

Haney wins that year.  Dorians legs were more massive but Haney had better overall detail/maturity.  Upper body goes to Haney.

I agree that Haney did not face the level of competition that was around in the '90's. Except for Yates, no one came close to Haney's size and structure. Gaspari was great but he was too narrow when he stood next to Haney and Labrada was too small. Christian had the height but his legs were too weak. Strydom looked great from the front but Haney destroyed him from the back. The contest was usually over when the initial line-up came out and Haney was taller and wider than everyone in the contest with a tiny waist. When the '90's came along, you had much, much better competition with Flex Wheeler, Kevin Levrone, Yates, Shawn Ray, Paul Dillett and the rest.

Haney was bigger than most during his time and had more balance and less weaknesses than the few guys who could match or exceed his size at the time. He was somehow transitional between the classic physiques and the mass monsters next to come. The fact that he somehow falls in between has worked against him as far as his "legacy" is concerned. Unfortunately for him, it's Yates who brought things up to the next level drastically.
