I didn't say it did.....but it's being described like Moets sped through a redlight.  Sorry, if my mother in law was on her death bed, and my wife was hysterical beside me, I might do the same thing.  The video don't lie, it's 100% clear this cop was in the wrong.  It is what it is.  What the cop should have done was let Moets go inside to see his mother and law and ticketed him at a later date.  It was all on video.

I agree.  I would probably do the same thing....but there was nothing out of line about the cop pulling him over...it was after he found out why Moats ran the light, that he should have let him go and just written the ticket, like you said.

Blah blah blah says all the people with ZERO LE experience.  Look at it from the Cops perspective.  A pimped out SUV runs a red light. When he pulls over the driver tells you to F@$K off, the passengers jump out, disregard your order to stay in the vehicle and run inside a hospital.  I would be thinking at that point "stolen vehicle".  He did everything by the book up to the point that hospital staff confirmed that the mother was indeed dying.  Of course the race card was pulled here...   ::)  As usual..  Lord forbid any accountability...  In the end BOTH parties were to blame to some degree.  The chief of Police had NO backbone of support for his officer...  Sad for both people.  One out a job the other out a mother in law...

I agree.

The player that was going to say goodbye to his mom before
she died, and was not allowed by a cocky, racist, God Complex cop
resigns.  Officer Powell resigned to keep his coworkers from getting harrassed.
He said, and this cop looked like a rookie punk.

They don't build cops like they used too.

It wasnt his mother, it was his mother in-law.  Its a win win for the player, dead mother in law and no awkward last goodbye pretending to be broken up.

I didn't see that, but if hospital personel verified the situation, the cop should have let him go immediately IMO.

WHat you dont see is the cop pulled his gun on the playerrs wife and other people in the car. He is uncompassionate and racist cop who is high on his power trip!

I was more on Moats side until I watched the video.  Could the officer have waited to write the ticket?  Yes.  He wasn't acting terrible or breaking any rules as a LE officer so he should have stayed on the force.  There were no grounds to fire him beside pressure from the community.  I've seen and heard worse.  If Moats wasn't an NFL player this would not be a huge issue.

You have discretion as an officer and he could have used it there and let him go but when you are dealing with an agitated man like that, HIS demeanor is going to dictate YOURS.  It's over anyway.  Good luck to this guy trying to get another LE job after this.

He pulled his weapon for officer safety. The scene is not controlled and their are multiple potential suspects who may or may not be armed.  Look at the random traffic stop in Oakland that left five officers dead, two of whom were making a traffic stop.

the guy went through a red light with his hazards on at like 15 mph....pulled up to a hospital....and his wife and her 70 year old father got out of the car.  No excuse....none.

I must say it's quite refreshing to see a thread not littered with racism when speaking about a potential black/white issue.

There is hope yet... :D

Just a lapse of judgement. The NFL player also didn't make it easier.

Nothing racist about that.

All I'm sayin is that if it were me, I would have been polite and the officer likely would have quickly given me a ticket and then cut me loose, or he would have just let me go.

That's because most here hate douchebag cops who abuse their authority more than they hate kneegrows.  Don't worry, though...  I can assure you the racism will return in upcoming threads!  :D

Tough to be "polite" when you have a relative dying and you're already amped up from rushing to get there.   ::)

If it were just a normal day, sure, you'd be charming and polite, and get out quickly... maybe even get off with a warning.  For Moats, it was far from a normal day, and any one of us could have found ourselves in the same situation.  That's why this story is resonating with so many people.

I respectfully disagree Goatboy.  I maybe would have wanted to act out like he did, but I would know that that would just take longer.  I would have to hold back if I wanted to see my loved one again.  I think because of his ethnic culture and the fact he is an NFL player he felt entitled.
