I'm a left winger and personally think bringing down a repressionist regime is a good thing - I don't know why everyone has their knickers in a knot about the CIA - there is obviously some resentment towards the government in Iran.

IMO, the best that can be hoped for is a stable Iran. I'd argue that they probably can't handle democracy due to having had a tribal culture for too long. We really can't impose an American style democracy on other cultures just because it would be politically convenient.

Blaming Islam for this mess would be the same as saying Judaism caused the holocaust, pograms, etc...

Religion doesn't cause extremism? False. Religion which imposes itself on ones life and draws inspiration to and promotes violence is a key ideological reason why it has created so many deaths. Sure power and manipulation from other walks of life help, but to flat out deny religion as a cause of extremism is short sighted.

I just doubt many of those countries have the infrastructure, economy or cultures progressive enough to handle full democracy. True, religion is a huge part of their culture and one of the reasons they're so backwards but it's not the only reason things are so fucked up over there.
