Best meal replacement shake?
« on: July 07, 2009, 09:39:52 AM »

I quit drinking these a long time ago, because they were so full of sugar.  During the periods when I've trained, I've only used zero-carb or low-carb options.

What do some of you guys doing full meal replacements use?  A ready-made blend?  Or protein mixed with something else you can take along with you easily?

I'm all ears.

I don't drink "meal replacements" per se, but I started using the Optimum Nutrition Oats and Whey along with a scoop of regular protein and it tastes great without the sugar.

I add tbsp of natural peanut butter to the above. Helps thicken/smooth it out.

X-2.

MRP's are an okay purchase for convenience but it's so much more economical and practical to make your own. ProLab makes a good MRP in Lean Mass Matrix and of course MetRx.

I like 2-3 scoops of whey, a little natural peanutbutter and some plain oats. Maybe a packet of Splenda, maybe a few blueberries or a bananna and you got an excellent MRP.

MRP's are just protein supplements with a little extra carbs and fats.

do you cook that oatmeal first, or do you just throw them in there dry.???...........i find when even when i blend them, all the oats sink to the bottom, and they are still hard to get down

Honestly I just throw them in there. I keep swirling and swirling the mix around my shaker cup to keep it afloat.

if you blend them with plain water that will happen,,,,,,,,, if you blend with the frozen fruit, the bannana & peanut butter,,, its a nice thick mixture, dont add loads of water either, i like it almost yoghurt thick

thanks guys good shit.........MRPs are a good idea, but its so much more economical, tasteful, and nutritios to do it yourself...........wheth er you are bulking or dieting you can fuck with the carb/fat/protein ratios........throw an additional scoop of protein, add less oats, maybe throw in a tablespoon  of flax

like optimum has that new oats and whey, its all expensive........i mean how hard is it to just throw a scoop of oats in your whey

lol......one of the latter arnold movies.......i think it was 'end of days'...........arnold wakes up with a hangover.........and throws a half-eaten slice of pizza, some pepto bismol, a few whole eggs, and a half-drunk can of warm skunk beer in a blender and slams it down for for breakfast...........now that is hardcore, a lesser man would retch with merely a whiff of something like that :) :) :)

IMO you make it way too complicated, just eat under your maintenance and get enough protein, you will be ripped. 100% guaranteed.

It's complicated, because I haven't studied this stuff since the early- to mid-90s when life was all about supplements.

Because of my work and lifestyle, there are days when I absolutely have to be able to eat a quick, convenient meal or two.  As for all the other questions, I don't mind admitting my ignorance.  Sure, I know a lot more than the average twink in my gym, but GetBig knows a hell of a lot more than I do and that knowledge is invaluable to someone like me who let himself go for a number of years and is not getting back into shape.

Yes, the basics - lift heavy, eat right, sleep - are still the same, but I'm not averse to trying to find an edge where I can.

Plus, nothing beats the motivation I get from you guys.   :D

Nothing tastes better than Musclemilk IMO. Be nice if they could put that taste into a MRP. I guess Labrada Lean Body is the best...

depends on what yoru current goal is tre...also how much you weigh, and what else youve eaten during the day..9maybe even when yoru workout is in acordane with your shake intake?)

but heres some general ideas

bulking =

20 grams whey
50 grams casein
75 grams maltodextrin/dextrose/whatever kid of glucose carb you want
some kind of veggie powder or some kind of fruit
multivitamin powder or pill
+ add some flavor   (maybe add some extra carbs if your not gainig and if your still not gaining then throw in a few egg yolks too)

dieting =

50 grams casein
50 grams carbs
veggie powder or veggie pill
multivitamin powder or pill
break open a few fish oil and pour em in
+ some kind of calorie free flavor... crystal light or something..
