It wasn't entirely a military problem, the MOD did a good job with their slice of the pie, same applies in Afghanistan or Iraq. I don't know how many military guys u know from the States, but the folks I work with are very highly educated. The lower enlisted in the US can't be rocks, with the level of equipment we work with every day. U guys have no idea what ur talking about. The VC were beaten in 1968, Vietnam is a completely different war. As are both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Unfortunately the only kids attracted to military life are the dum dums and those with low self esteem. Majority of them have both. They need the uniforms, medals, big guns etc to feel like useful members of society. And they need to be stupid enough not to realise they can now be blown away in Afghanistan. Not heros, just little boys with low self esteem and small brains. And I was in the RAF for 12 years including the time of the first Desert Storm.
I was at Seaworld Florida in June. Before the show they asked all servicemen and former servicemen to stand. I stood. I was then subjected to a round of applause. I was mortified and felt patronised. What next ? Stand up all Mongols so we can applaud your courage and bravery in having the guts to go out on the street looking like a mongol? The mongols don't know there mongols so they need no applause. Same can be said of the military.

I'm currently training to be a Royal Marine and recruits with good A levels and degrees are common place. I've got a good degree and I didn't join up due to self-esteem issues... I joined up because I wanted to do something more interesting than sitting behind a desk all day.

You people dont understand modern wars are only a way to force other countries to adopt multiculturalism and the occidental way of life : TV mac donald porn flat screens and 9/5 job everywhere in the world for everyone. Soldiers nowadays are young people with very few skills who are unable to fit in society for whatever reasons and believe it or not BUT IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE CASE, parents always sent their kids in the army cause they didnt know what to do with them.
The second reason is that it's a career where you can earn a shitload of oney not doing that much , epsecially if your country isnt at war.
These are both the main reasons why people enlist.

Now some other skilled people apply because they can make an even more bigger shitload of money as officers while staying away from the close quarter combat situations.

I'm not saying soldiers are dumb or serve no purpose considering wars are useless nowadays, I m just saying that it doesnt mean as much as it meant in the past to be a "soldier", and that we have to have a new different look of what is the army in our modern day and how to use it when most of the battles are counter insurgency type fights more and more taking in our own cities with terrorist like individuals.
Soldiers are conducting police/SWAT like missions more and more instead of real conventional wars with gorund vehicles etc.
To say it like it is, we ll only need in the future "police" squads in heavy armors able to face close quarters combats situations in cities and transport vehicles (wether it's air transport or ground or sea transports) and planes with laser guided bombs and nukes and that's it.

They ll mix police and army troops int he future, cause the threats we re going to face wil be the same everywhere wether it's inside our nations (well nations wont exist anymore anyway ) or in foreign countries.

Really..what units have u been in...what combat. Did u serve under Patton in WW2 or were u with the Marines at Inchon..what was that like...do tell. In other words..stick to ur video games because its obvious u have no idea. I was safer in 2003 in my tank then in 2006 walking around Afganistan.

stop being a fucking ass, in the army most of the soldiers are just grunts with their uniforms and guns and that's it. Only the most skilled educated / diplomed ones are driving/flying vehicles just like in the civil world: those with more diplomas and more skills just do the best/SAFER stuff while the big majority of the others do the more menial/stupid/ less entertaining job.
Always been the same everywhere and especially in the army, and always will be. Videso games? Lets talk about that, No you re not going to fly jets or chinooks and snipe people like you do in videos games cause you joined the army: you ll be selected for what you can do best based on your skills...if you have none like most of the enlisted recruits, you end as a grunt.

U have zero idea how the service works...zero and as usual here..u attack the messenger without anything to back it up. Afghanistan is no threat to the West. They are an insular nation only interested in their own borders. When I joined the RAF the UK and USA were supporting it against the evil USSR.

Pakistan is the breeding ground for terrorists. We all know that. Unfortunately they are far too powerfull in terms of conventional forces and Nuclear ability for the USA to send their bully boys in.
ITS ALL ABOUT OIL GENTLEMEN. Having a foothold in the middle east because USA imports most of it's oil from there.
I want to thank all the Heros like Headhunter for allowing us all to still drive around with cheap gas in the USA. It is worth dying for gentlemen.

Well they spill into Afghanistan....and we're not talking a solid border anyway and we roll into Pakistan enough to do what we need to. The Pakistani army has kicked enough AQ and Taliban back into Afghanistan to be a problem again.But in any event we all need the go-juice so what else are we gonna do. this is what i tried to tell him, but for some reason he thinks i hate the military and despise em, when i admire guys like petraeus and others,period.

But i wont say that the US militray is full of "heroes", all you have mainly there are grunts who do what they are told to do because thats what get em paid, case closed. It's a fuycking job for most nothing else.
I doubt they care about being recognized as heroes either. They re just doing their stuff, and most know that they arent there for freedom or other peacekeeping bullshits , they re there to secure oil ressources and prevent extremists from getting nukes, and use em against israel or europe or india.

Anyway if there s ever a major nuclear war between superpowers like china russia israel pakistan and the US, you can be sure soldiers will be useless. Even mechanized infantry will be useless. It would be about planes submarines and balistic missles and wouldnt last more than a few hours.
