Day care incident
« on: August 19, 2009, 02:28:10 PM »
Man dogs seem to have injury cycles too.  Cody the chocolate Lab was at day care last Friday. I had the day off work so i decided to bring him so he could play and swim in their pools and i could do my stuff.  Well i went to the gym and worked out.  Then I went to get some food and my cell phone rings and it is the daycare place as i picked up the phone I knew it was probably a problem.  They said Cody and another dog collided while chasing a ball and Cody smashed his face into the top of Hershey's head.  They said his lip was cut and his upper gum was split!  I went to get him and take him to the vet.  They got us in in 2 hours. Cody seemed OK a little blood and his gum area did not look real good.

The vet checked him out he got 3 staples in his lip to close the cut and is on pain killers and antibiotics.  The vet said he is surprised the tooth was not knocked out and wants Cody to be seen by the vet dentist tomorrow to see if we need to do anything more cause he could not make the call and wants the specialist's opinion on how to procede.

Cody is in good spirits but I am keeping him home till we find out more about his tooth and gums.  The vet said originally his tooth might be loose.  There is a chance he could loose his tooth.  He's such a handsome boy it kills me to think.

The more I have thought about things though yes Cody has had some incidents, but he has lived!  he has done stuff and lived like a dog should....having fun doing the things he so enjoys.  That gives me joy   :)  I hope he does not need surgery.

It's all fun 'n games until someone gets hurt  :(

I hope Cody doesn't need surgery.  I wonder  ??? would a loose tooth ever tighten up on it's own?

Keep us updated.

How's Hershey's head?  :P

Thanks P  :)  I dont really know what would happen with his tooth, but the vet said these kind things can be problematic if not fixed/healed right.  So will hopefully find out more tommorow.  I forgot to ask about Hershey, I think she was OK remarkably.

Well the vet dental specialist checked out Cody yesterday.  There is a fracture to the root of his tooth.  They gave a couple options, root canal and splinting to save tooth, BTW it's his incisor just inboard of the upper cannine, about $2000 and a couple surgeries.  Or tooth extraction, the specialist said to my vet if it was her dog she would pull the tooth, but if i wanna go the other route we can, tooth extraction $300-400.  Or leave it which they did not recommend saying there is a high chance for infection to set in.

I dropped Cody off this morning to have his tooth pulled.  :(  He should be home tonight whole thing sucks.  Wondering if I can get daycare place to pick up these vet bills?  As whole thing is gonna cost me about $500+

Poor Cody :(  He should feel fine afterward though I think.  And he will still be a handsome boy...maybe even more endearing w/a tooth missing :)

Have you checked into this yet?  Seems like they'd have some kind of insurance for something like this.

The day care is not responsible I bet.  I'm sure you signed any kind of waiver relieving them of any responsibility.

Tooth extraction was probably the best choice.  Unless the dog was being used for the show ring which requires all teeth to be present, I can't see the reason to pay $2000 to save it.

I have a bitch that has a tooth snapped.  It's been like that for awhile & since there's no pain connected to it, I've left it alone.  We watch it all the time, & she seems fine.

I'm sure the daycare is not held responsible.  After all, there really wasn't any negligence.  It was an accident.  Fortunately it won't hinder his eating.

The expense sucks ::) I know.

Thanks guys, I'm going to pick him up soon vet said everything went fine.  :)

As to the daycare place, yes they make you sign whats known as a "hold harmless waiver" even schools do it when your kids take a field trip or something.  Thing is they don't hold any water in court.  You are taking your pet/kid whatever to a place and you are paying them to supervise and oversee your loved one.  There is plenty of liability there, you would expect them to do a reasonable job of it.  I mean if your kid got badly injured on a field trip do you think the school would not be responsible just cause you signed a waiver?  Places do it to CYA so people do not persue litigation, they drop it cause they "signed the waiver" A lawyer could tear that apart.  They were not doing this for free and have a responsibility to make sure your loved one is safe no matter what you signed.  I mean think about it just cause you signed a piece of paper does not let them be careless, if it did you could never trust them.  Sure to sue them for the money would cost me more than the claim in time and aggravation.  Someone can not have you sign away any liability.

I did call the place and talked to the owner and of course she refuses to help with the bills, I knew she would.  I just figured I would make her say it to me. I hope she feels good about it, we have spent thousands of dollars there over the years.  And yes Stella to have a Hold Harmless waiver like they and all doggie daycare places have one, they must have some type of liability insurance and this place does.  They just refuse to make a claim.  As they know if they gotta make claims then the premiums go up.  There also is a deductable they probably have to meet first.  Pisses me off cause this is a very busy place in an affluent neighborhood, they do lots of boarding there.  Owner bought a new Escalade a year or so ago so they are making good money.  Which is fine but don't turn your back on your long time loyal costumers. We just had Cody there earlier that week for 4 days boarding and day care included, $170.  We have spent plenty of money there.

Princess, I call what happened an incident not an accident as this could have been avoided.  I also take Cody sometimes to another place and they don't throw balls there just for this and other reasons IE dogs getting possessive of balls or fighting for them.  I mean to throw a ball into the middle of a play yard with dogs all around, there is no telling which direction one will come from to get the ball.  They should know this and do things to prevent it.  Now because of their mistake I have dog that is missing a tooth and under went potentially dangerous surgery.  There is a big risk anytime they have to put a dog "under"

So I picked up Cody yesterday afternoon and he was crying and so not himself I almost cried.  I have never seen him like that, it made me sick.  Vet said he "should be" fine in a while.  I have never seen this once happy dog so scared and sad.  Last night I was really worried, he would not drink  but ate some which he vomited up some of it later.  This morning he seemed a bit better but he is still not back to 100%.  This has been very hard on us both.  He finally drank some water this morning, thats a good sign and I gave him a bit of food and his meds.  He is just laying there not very happy about the whole thing.  We did our morning walk and he is eliminating which is another good sign, I just pray he is back to his old self soon.

How is Cody today (Sat) Luv?

He was OK in the morning still a little out of it, although he did come into my bedroom to say good morning and he was walking with some pep in his step so I was optimistic.  But I called the vet in the AM and spoke to him how rough the Friday night was for Cody and that i was concerned.  I told Cody had eaten and went to the bath room and just in the AM had finally drank some water, he did vomit up some of his food.  he still seemed groggy though and not himself.  vet told me it would take a day or so more cause of the procedure and drugs used till Cody got them out of his system.  we went for a 20 min walk at about 2pm and i could see he was tired from it and moving kind of slow.  Vet said him wanting to go on walks, eating and drinking finally are great signs and he was not worried.

around 6pm a friend came over and Cody was all excited to see her and around that time he really seemed to be more himself.  The rest of the night he kept getting better and better, he finally went and slept in his bed and in the other places he likes to lay down.  When he is stressed he will sit or lay on the landing of the stairs or the utility room floor.  So last night he turned the corner and this morning seemed his usual self ( the best birthday present i could ever get)  we went for a longer walk today and he seemed stronger and not tired.  we played a bit a while ago and he seems happy again  :)  Thank God, It is scary for your dog to have to be put under, too many things can go wrong.

He has 10 stitches in his gum from the tooth extraction, which will just dissolve the vet said.  He has to get the staples out of his lip next week. And by the following week he should be clear to play ball and chew again.  I will take him swimming then.  we will just makes sure he heals up this week and is good to go soon.
