I got one of those $30 mp3 players from Target that hold 1 gig of music.  It's nice for the gym cause you can drop it and it doesn't break, and nobody's gonna steal it, because it's just so fugly.

Of course, I still have a *tape* player in my truck, so...

I'm on my second ipod.   I had a second generation of the original (hard disk based) and got the new Nano, in black, the day it came out.  http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/   Works great. I love it!  Now, I can shoot movies of all the muscle boys and porn stars at my gym without them even knowing!  ;D

Depends on what you need it to do. If you are asking between those two, I'd choose the iPod if only for the convenience. Zune is cool though.

I have a few different ones, but I enjoy my 8g Sansa Fuze most at the moment. Got it refurb @ Newegg for 50$. It's light (flash-based memory as compared to hard drive), has FM radio, does voice recording, video, and the sound chip is pretty good. You add files by dropping them onto the respective folder.

The Creative players are good in regard to sound and video, but not sure about extra features. Creative has a file manager to add and remove files.

iPods are fine for users that don't want to futz around and does have a simple mode of adding files (iTunes). The sound is decent.

There many in between, but that's my basic overview.

Almost always, yes.

yeah right now i have a Sandisk i think its 4G of memory i got it for like 70$, it does what i want, but the sound doesnt get loud enough, i had an ipod a while ago it kept freezing on me and giving me the sad face error so i was like fuck it... At one point i even got the Archos 605 or 650, that shit was expensive but couple of drops in thee gym, that was the end of it...

so right now i just want something with good and loud sound, i could care less aout FM, voice recording, games, video etc

kinda true cuz some guys just really sell themselves at a premium knowing that some schmoe won't be rich enought to "call their bluff"

now the cheap ones will give you your money's worth cuz you know they are always working and perfecting their craft

I had a nano that died (becareful with whatever you get) when it got wet.....and to keep my itunes going I bought a Shuffle which is cheaper   and practical.   Depends how much you want to spend and how many songs you want.   I am a iTunes addict!!!!  Good luck!!!

Can anyone say for sure if there is one single mp3 player with the absolute BEST sound quality and volume? Also what would be the BEST headphones to use with this player (under $300.00).

Unless you're planning to listen to solely lossless formats, it's all about diminishing returns with mp3 format.

I'd say check out head-fi.org for audiphile recommendations. In my experience, Creative sounds great with Sansa's Fuze and Clip neck-and-neck and iPod last. iPods don't sound crappy, they just sound a bit over-processed at times. If you want to buy a lesser-known but well-respected brand, check out the models offered by Cowon. I haven't heard them, but the guys on head-fi seem to like them a lot with the Sansa Fuze/Clip.

For headphones, people raved about Grados, but the open-air design might not be suited for gym, train, public. Eytmotics and Shures get a lot of love for in-ear designs.

If you asked me and I was a friend, I'd say get a Sansa Fuze or Clip and a pair of JVC Marshmallow earbuds for 20$. You could spend more on headphones but if you're really not planning to adopt listening to lossless and esoteric formats like FLAC and Monkey and elite soundcards (that don't really exist in mp3 players), it turns into money wasted.

Thanks. I listen to a lot of trance and it's very annoying to use a portable device and lose all the bass and depth of the music. All  you are really hearing is thump thump thump and a some synthesizer rifs. I want an audio-phile status mp3 headphone setup that i can use at the gym or also to travel or sit for hours playing poker etc. Maybe a diff set of headphones for the gym...
