USC Player Nearly Kills Self in Lifting Accident...
« on: September 29, 2009, 08:31:55 AM »
USC senior running back Stafon Johnson is unlikely to play again this season after a weightlifting accident in a campus weight room Monday morning.

Johnson was bench-pressing with an assistant strength and conditioning coach spotting him when the bar fell out of his right hand and landed on his throat.  California Hospital Medical Center spokeswoman Katreena Salgado said Johnson was in critical but stable condition late Monday after more than seven hours of surgery in Los Angeles.

Stafon Johnson leads the team in touchdowns. He was treated for crushing injuries to his neck as well as severe injuries to his larynx, the hospital's trauma medical director Gudata Hinika said.  It's unlikely Johnson will be able to play again this season, but doctors expect him to make a full recovery, Hinika said in a statement.

"It hit him with a lot of force, and it hurt him," coach Pete Carroll said after the Trojans' brief practice Monday night. The Trojans' head strength and conditioning coach Chris Carlisle said that the bench press is one of the safest exercises in the weight room.  "I've seen players have the bar slip and fall onto their chest, but never in my 25 years of coaching have I heard of someone dropping a bar on their throat," said Carlisle, who according to USC's Web site was within 10 feet of the accident. "We're fortunate he was being spotted."

Carroll said Johnson "was OK," but couldn't speak when the running back was going to the hospital.

"That happens sometimes when you're doing bench presses, but this one just hit him wrong," Carroll said. "You can miss the rack or something. This was right at the end of his set, and he wasn't putting the bar down on the rack yet."

The loss of Johnson, 21, is a serious blow to the No. 7 Trojans who rely heavily on their ground game.

He's USC's second leading rusher and has the most touchdowns on the team with five.

Johnson, who led USC in rushing last season with 705 yards and nine touchdowns, scored the Trojans' go-ahead touchdown against Ohio State two weeks ago.

Several of his teammates were in the weight room when the accident happened.

"There was a bunch of guys in the weight room because it was a regular workout, so they jumped to make sure he was OK right off the bat," Carroll said. "One of our strength coaches was right there with him, doing the drill with him. He was cared for immediately. It was scary."

So wtf kind of excuse did the "spotter" have? If it was lighter weight, why didn't he catch it? If it was heavy bench, why wasn't there more than one guy spotting?

i think it was 225...as for the spotter, it probably happened so fast that he couldn't catch the bar in mid air before it hit him in the neck.

Interesting that the bar hit him directly across the throat, I wonder if it was a flat bench or decline, etc..... I'd bet a thumbless grip was involved too.

It's rare though that a bar just falls in unequipped lifting. Generally the spotter gets some warning when the bar begins to slow down. Sounds like suicide grip was involved and personally I wouldn't blame the spotter unless the dude was clearly struggling with the weight and he did nothing about it.

Agreed. I've been lifting donkey's years and I've never even come close to something like this happening. I think the worst that ever happened to me was dropping a nickle on my foot.

For about 5 minutes it hurt like the dickens. Not like I needed 7 hours of surgery, tho.

I am a certified strength coach and something like this is uncommon but the incident itself does seem a bit strange and unlikely

-although the player is at fault -- it was the coaches responsibility to supervise and spot each athlete and inseason workouts are not designed to be that intense(65-80% max) and compared to other olympic lifts the program is built around i.e. squats, cleans, jerks -- the press is 'safe' but in a freeweight room ANYTHING is possible BUT they have coaches there and trained professionals to prevent this kinds of shit and insurance company will be asking questions on liability -- hell if that guy losses an NFL contract they could sue for negligence

I mean your a star football player and the weight room takes you out??  shit is uncommon

What kinda dumbass HS's do you have around your parts, stud?   ;D

No way that an accident requiring 7 hours of surgery "happens all the time in HS."  They would ban weight training.  Not to mention the school districts would be sued into oblivion by idiot parents.

I was a bodybuilder first football player 2nd...but other guys who were athletes trying to get stronger did lifts the goofiest ways   to people like us (bodybuilders) bencibg is like tying shoes to athletes who have never lifted its like me learning chinese.   I've seen guys bench too wide  too narrow...hit their necks   hit there tummies etc etc.   The 7hrs of surgery  was merely a way to heal his throat so he can play...all of this news was not suppose to hit the media....as it stirs things to be worse than what they are.

this is why i always train with my power rack so that even if i dropped the bar directly towards my neck the spotter bars would catch it.

A trainer was "spotting" him.  So  he didn't need a power rack.    ;D
