Searching in Vain for the Obama Magic
By Gabor Steingart

 AFP
President Barack Obama's Tuesday speech left a
bad taste in many mouths.

________________________ ________________________ ________________________ __

Never before has a speech by President Barack Obama felt as false as his Tuesday address announcing America's new strategy for Afghanistan. It seemed like a campaign speech combined with Bush rhetoric -- and left both dreamers and realists feeling distraught.

One can hardly blame the West Point leadership. The academy commanders did their best to ensure that Commander-in-Chief Barack Obama's speech would be well-received.

Just minutes before the president took the stage inside Eisenhower Hall, the gathered cadets were asked to respond "enthusiastically" to the speech. But it didn't help: The soldiers' reception was cool.

One didn't have to be a cadet on Tuesday to feel a bit of nausea upon hearing Obama's speech. It was the least truthful address that he has ever held. He spoke of responsibility, but almost every sentence smelled of party tactics. He demanded sacrifice, but he was unable to say what it was for exactly.

An additional 30,000 US soldiers are to march into Afghanistan -- and then they will march right back out again. America is going to war -- and from there it will continue ahead to peace. It was the speech of a Nobel War Prize laureate.

Just in Time for the Campaign

For each troop movement, Obama had a number to match. US strength in Afghanistan will be tripled relative to the Bush years, a fact that is sure to impress hawks in America. But just 18 months later, just in time for Obama's re-election campaign, the horror of war is to end and the draw down will begin. The doves of peace will be let free.

The speech continued in that vein. It was as though Obama had taken one of his old campaign speeches and merged it with a text from the library of ex-President George W. Bush. Extremists kill in the name of Islam, he said, before adding that it is one of the "world's great religions." He promised that responsibility for the country's security would soon be transferred to the government of President Hamid Karzai -- a government which he said was "corrupt." The Taliban is dangerous and growing stronger. But "America will have to show our strength in the way that we end wars," he added.

It was a dizzying combination of surge and withdrawal, of marching to and fro. The fast pace was reminiscent of plays about the French revolution: Troops enter from the right to loud cannon fire and then they exit to the left. And at the end, the dead are left on stage.

Obama's Magic No Longer Works

But in this case, the public was more disturbed than entertained. Indeed, one could see the phenomenon in a number of places in recent weeks: Obama's magic no longer works. The allure of his words has grown weaker.

It is not he himself who has changed, but rather the benchmark used to evaluate him. For a president, the unit of measurement is real life. A leader is seen by citizens through the prism of their lives -- their job, their household budget, where they live and suffer. And, in the case of the war on terror, where they sometimes die.

Political dreams and yearnings for the future belong elsewhere. That was where the political charmer Obama was able to successfully capture the imaginations of millions of voters. It is a place where campaigners -- particularly those with a talent for oration -- are fond of taking refuge. It is also where Obama set up his campaign headquarters, in an enormous tent called "Hope."

In his speech on America's new Afghanistan strategy, Obama tried to speak to both places. It was two speeches in one. That is why it felt so false. Both dreamers and realists were left feeling distraught.

The American president doesn't need any opponents at the moment. He's already got himself.

What's funny lately is that foreign media is more honest than even our own.  Especially on the global warming hoax.

I said early on Obama is all sizzle and no steak.  Slowly but surely, people are waking up to that reality.

My cousin is a cadet at West Point and was at that disgraceful speech yesterday.

Obama is a total disaster-- I cannot believe we have to endure 3 more years of this bullshit.

This whole things stinks of political manuevering, as usual the POTUS thinks he can please everyone. Instead of being a strong leader, he tries to appease all, what a fucking embarassment. Then of course there is the habitial use of I and me in his speaches, man do I miss Ronald Reagan right now.

On another note what fucking genius decided it is a good idea to let the enemy know when you are leaving?

Or, to borrow from a certain former NFL coach:

BARACK IS WHO WE THOUGHT HE WAS!!! AND, WE LET HIM OFF THE HOOK (At least, 54% of American voters did)!!!

Look, hopefully it will work and our troops safer and better able to carry out their mission.  I am not a general, and wont pretend to be one, but many are really upset over this, left and right.

Right are complaining because they will attack anything with a democratic name on it, the left are complaining because somehow they thought when Obama promised action in Afghanistan he meant pull out the troops.

I couldn't be happier with the decision.  This is what i voted for.  An end to Iraq, an escalation in Afghanistan and then an end to that war too.  This is what he promised and he's delivering.

I can understand being against Iraq but not Afghanistan, that is something i do not understand.

Look, i will bash and attack him on sdomestic issues since I believe we are privy to more update info on thise issues.  On these things, I am sure the president gets intel and info we really dont know.

If we needed 65,000 troops, and that meant less deaths on our part and get the job done, so be it.

I just hope he is following the instructions of those in the know and that this results in safer troops for our mission and hopefully these guys can come home.

Really his plan is great? All the military folks who have commented on this think its about as useful as a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. He has set the Military up to fail, plain and simple. This is not a sporting event with a time limit, you either go in with full intention to win or you get the fuck out. He has given them 18 months, the Taliban, Al Queda and every other wack job over there now knows that they just wait it out and the Americans go away.

No, you can't "please" us guys, when the top general has to BEG for FOUR MONTHS, only to get 75% of what he needs.

No, you can't "please" us guys, when you have a Commander-in-Chief, who says he's committed to winning a war, that he stated we HAVE TO WIN. Yet, when the rubber meets the road, he tends to get sheepish.

That's because a number of things with a Democratic name are quite DUMB!!!

The right is complaining, because McChrystal shouldn't have to wait 4 months to get 75% of what he needs. And, the advertised timetable isn't exactly sitting well, either (But, from what I gathered from Obama's speech, that timetable ain't set in stone).

The bottom line is, when it comes to war, the goal should be VICTORY, period. If he can do that by or before July 2011, so be it. If not, so be it.

But, we don't leave until the job is done.

UH the general doesn't make the rules son.  Never has never will. HE can advise all he wants but he does not make the final decision keep hatin' though.  When we win this war just don't go giving credit to Bush for it like i know you neocons will.
