No way to fire a pistol
« on: December 03, 2009, 06:15:53 AM »
at least on TV
the bros are always portrayed as firing handguns with a 'sideways' grip
why do they do this?

bc it is/looks cool?

It cannot possibly help their marksmanship?

perhaps 240 could offer his ballistic insights here?

why do the Bros wear the hats only on the crown of their heads almost pointing up? most think its a "fashion statement". Same with the sideways grip, looks more "Gangsta".

and NO it doesnt help with your aim, at least not for me

The sights are on top of a gun.
There's no way to aim at a target when your weapon is sideways because...no sights.

It's retarded.

I guess when you're shooting point blank or with a barrel against a temple...it really doesn't matter.

Ha! Any excuse to bring in your racial prejudices!? Can't wait to see what's next: Black actors and their inability to use Stanislavsky method characterization.

How did cowboys fire from the hip back in the day?

Or did they? Was it just a movie-interpretation when two gunslingers duelled?

Sideways grip is the correct way to fire a gun when you want to curve the bullet.

but you need the proper arm movement/arch to curve it properly

It doesn't improve accuracy at all and had zero benefits. I've tried it at the range when I was in the military to see what the hype of this style was about.

If anything the recoil is kind of dangerous at that angle of fire. A weak wrist or grip and you'll drop that weapon and/or possibly shoot your damn self.

as far as movies...I've seen it used in so many movies nowadays it's ridiculous. All hype ...an average joe that goes to the range weekly would shoot their initials into a clown trying to look cool shooting like that straight up.

yes, all true. Don't forget the proper trigger pull, at 50.567% of the  movement.

it's called a 'taco grip'.

it's good for keeping muzzle rise under control, but i doubt thats why you see it in the movies.

Gunslingers never duelled. That was a hollywood invention to memmick European duelling. Think about it, the Wild West had no code of conduct, and was the most lawless and violent time in American History ( funny hoe it was mostly white men doing on the killing, yet they are considered folk heroes, blacks today are demonized for being The Devil incarnate), do you really think that two gunslingers are gonna fairly have a gun duel in the streets?!

Dear Parker,
the people of the wild west are considered heroes because they're killing Indians.
The black people today kill white people and are considered savages, just like the Indians of yesteryear (feather, not dot).

Hope this helps.

Also, I can curve a bullet when I shoot.

Uh, no. It was proven to be a proven Hollywood invetion. Was on the history channel. Two outlaws who cared not about law and order and one who probably shot the sheriff and the other who probably shot sheriff are not going to stand in the
middle of the street and face one another. Think about current shootouts, you are going try and shoot the person as quickly as possible.

Back then there was no code of duelling. And most cowboys were either Mexican or black, they were
farmhands. Not the Marlboro man stereotype.

And Manbearpig, the outlaws didn't care about Indians, they were outlaws. I forgot which city it was but it had the highest rate of murders than anywhere in the US, still. And the Undertakers in most WW towns had the best business, they would make a killing.  the Indians didn't want encroachment, and felt threatened.
You do know that the US government broke every treaty they had with the Indians. And no not all Indian tribes were the good spirits, some lived off of raping and pilliaging, but you don't hear about them.

But let's not forget the fact that Pioneer America practically killed off the Buffalo population, the mountain population, the timber wolf pop, had exterminated the passager pigeon and the Carolina Parakeet. Among other things.

And let's not forget, that many of the WW outlaws teamed up with hostile Indians to do robberies, and killings.
