Boxing
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:08:58 AM »
Im sick and tired of people who have obviously never had a fight in their lives saying what a pussy sport boxing is and you hit each other with "pillows". Those pillows are leather pads which fucking hurt, more than a bare fist and ive been hit plenty of times with both. They are there to protect the hands not the face of the guy being hit.
Those of you who want to slag off boxing go into your local boxing club and tell them what pussys they are, never mind taking the shots you fags wouldnt even have the stamina to do 2 rounds, you have no idea how hard a sport it is so go back to watching men in thongs all oiled up and thinking you re tough because you bench 3 plates a side.
(yes im having a meltdown)

I used to train at a good gym - full of pros and aba/international level amateurs -and there is nothing more demoralising than getting smashed in sparring by some sixteen year old that you outweigh by 30 lbs.

I agree boxing is a badass sport but the gloves ARE there to help protect the other guys face.  If you just wanted to protect your hands, wrapping them good and wearing 4oz MMA gloves does the job just fine.

lol...true. I'm 32 and I spar with teens up to guys in their early-mid 20's. You want to talk about "keeping you on your toes" ...those bastards see it as disrespect that a 32 year old is actually in the ring with them out pointing.

It's fun and I recommend it to anybody who "still has it" and doesn't mind "keeping sharp" even at 32. They call me shane mosley in the gym because of my age but still as athletic and fast as the young guys. LMAO It's a compliment I feel. Shane is great at 38.

It is fun though.

man I have so much respect for you. LOL. How about I got in there and rolled with those guys(we have great MMA trainers and grappling guys also at my gym)....talk about didn't last no more than 2:55 seconds man round one.

I got in there and tried to grapple once with our grappling guy. He finished 2nd at NAGA in boca raton in 2009. Talk about fatigue. How about NONE and I mean ZERO of my 12 round boxing cardio crossed over. LMAO

Totally different monster.

You my friend are a true warrior at 45 rolling BJJ and boxing. Trust me...I can appreciate what you are doing at 45. wow .

Keep up the fight my friend. Much respect on your desire and determination in there. That fire will only leave when you are expired, so keep up the fight.

Great pic. Apparently, Clay/Ali was heard saying 'Get up and fight like a man' to Liston at that moment. Apocryphal?

Can't tell you. I don't know enough about boxing. I do remember when I was a tad watching the Ali fights in the '70's with my Da and all his buds and thinking I was kinda cool watching the fights and listening to what they said.

I do know that when you fly into McCarran, you fly right over Liston's plot, which is right beside the runway. I look down every time, but I never see it. Sad end for a bad man.

(Rope a Dope) was a tactic he used to let the other boxer punch himself out where in he would lie on the ropes and let them just throw punches ie tire themselves out, then he would come out swinging I think it may have had something to do with the state he is in now too many punches to the head....Keith show us the pic.

You're looking at a whopping 4-6 oz glove size difference between boxing and MMA. Boxers where 8 oz, sometimes 10. Not a far stretch from what MMA uses. Besides, MMA fighters need their hands more for wresting and jiu jitsu so wearing a 8 oz wouldn't be too pretty for those endeavors.

Wrong! The gloves are used in boxing to protect the hands. The head is much harder than the hands.

Yeah, that's really evident in the film 'When We Were Kings.' If you haven't seen it, I recommend it like no one's business. It's an Ali/'70's retrospective, Brilliant.

Well, I actually box, not so sure you do, so I might know something about it.  Gloves do help protect the hands, but like I said before, wrapping your hands is mostly what protects them.  4oz MMA gloves do that job just fine.

As far as FlexB's comment about it being a "whopping" 4 oz difference, I know you have never boxed or fought MMA or you would know the difference between a 4oz glove and an 8oz one is HUGE.  Think about how many knockouts you see in a 3 round MMA fight compared to the number of knockouts you see in the first 3 rounds of a boxing match.  Its just common sense to realize the twice the padding makes an enormous difference in the number of punchs you can take.  Why do you think boxers use 12oz or bigger gloves when they are sparring?  It isn't to protect their hands, its to reduce the punishment you take during sparring.

K-1, thanks for the kind words, but I'm not anything special because I still fight at my age.  What else can I do?  I can't get younger, so all I can do is keep going :)
