MMA or you would know the difference between a 4oz glove and an 8oz one is HUGE.  Think about how many knockouts you see in a 3 round MMA fight compared to the number of knockouts you see in the first 3 rounds of a boxing match.  Its just common sense to realize the twice the padding makes an enormous difference in the number of punchs you can take.  .

:)

I totally disagree, first of all let me tell you I boxed for 7 years , I was a golden glove champion my record was 30-5-5 , I've been training  MMA for the past 3 years ,The difference between a 4oz glove  and a 8oz glove  is the total weight  of the glove  ,the padding is almost the same  , MMA gloves don't have fingers -thumb, that's why they are lighter, The KO'S in MMA have to do more with the lack of defense than the thickness of the padding ,and I love both sports the same.

I guess we have to agree to disagree.  The 4oz MMA gloves we use don't even really have padding, just enough of that gel stuff in the fingers to keep them from being bare knuckles.  As far as the "lack of defense" being the reason for the KO's, I disagree with that to some degree too.  You have guys using the same defense they used in boxing, switching over to the smaller gloves, and getting KO'd. Its much harder to defend against punchs in MMA because the gloves are so much smaller, you can't get away with being even a little loose in your defense.  The smaller gloves can sneak through much smaller openings.  Its not that they lack defense, its just that defending in MMA is different than boxing.

Well, I actually box, not so sure you do, so I might know something about it.  Gloves do help protect the hands, but like I said before, wrapping your hands is mostly what protects them.  4oz MMA gloves do that job just fine.

As far as FlexB's comment about it being a "whopping" 4 oz difference, I know you have never boxed or fought MMA or you would know the difference between a 4oz glove and an 8oz one is HUGE.  Think about how many knockouts you see in a 3 round MMA fight compared to the number of knockouts you see in the first 3 rounds of a boxing match.  Its just common sense to realize the twice the padding makes an enormous difference in the number of punchs you can take.  Why do you think boxers use 12oz or bigger gloves when they are sparring?  It isn't to protect their hands, its to reduce the punishment you take during sparring.

K-1, thanks for the kind words, but I'm not anything special because I still fight at my age.  What else can I do?  I can't get younger, so all I can do is keep going :)

Obviously there's a difference between the glove size, it's twice the size in boxing. Of course there's a difference in terms of impact but if a guy hits you clean with an 8 oz compared to 4 oz the damage will still be there although may not be as great.

As far as your argument about MMA guys gettin ko'd more. Well yea, their technique is shit compared to a boxer and don't know how to protect and move their head to that degree. Most MMA guys stand up game in comparison to an actual boxers is sad.  But obviously they just don't have the training a boxer has.

I have boxed BTW, just never seriously

While i conceed your point about the importance of wrapping the hands to protect them  the 8oz gloves are there to protect them also. a boxers hands would not last long with just 4oz gloves. Remember a fight can last 36 mins and a boxer throws many more punches and with greater speed and power than most MMA Fighters.
To suggest a boxer would be fine with 4oz gloves is quite wrong.

Many time the fights last that long because they have bigger gloves.  If they had smaller gloves, the fights wouldn't last nearly as long.  They throw many more punchs because they have to.  Most boxers do hit with greater speed and power than most MMA guys.  That is why you would see many more knockouts and in much less time than you do in boxing now.

Edwin Valero disagrees

26-0 , 26KO

19 KO's in the 1st round, 2KO in the second rd, 1 in the 3rd rd

Amateur record , 86-6 with 57 knockouts (big gloves and head gear included)

Compared to a boxer they don't. That has to do with a lot of factors but having smaller gloves by 4 oz isn't really one. Most MMA fighters, even top ones, have shitty striking technique. Look at Lidell. Brutal technique and he always leaves his guard low while swinging like a drunk monkey leaving his head in harms way all the while. That's not to say his punches don't hurt, the man has stone hands.
I think most MMA fighters, when getting KO'd, never see the punch coming because they're too busy throwing some wild haymaker or setting up for one.

The man has amazing knockout power but that doesn't mean I'm wrong.  By the reasoning being presented here, if he wore smaller gloves his knockout record would be worse than it is.  Why do you think he has more knockouts as a pro than as an amateur (percentage wise)?  Certainly pro boxers as a whole can take a better punch on average than amateurs.  That's part of the reason they made it to the pros.  And still he knocked out a higher percentage of fighters in the pros.  Why do you think that is?

No headgear, stronger and better fighter. Amateur boxing is a whole different game and is about scoring points rather than just tryin to get your guy out of there

Im sick and tired of people who have obviously never had a fight in their lives saying what a pussy sport boxing is and you hit each other with "pillows". Those pillows are leather pads which fucking hurt, more than a bare fist and ive been hit plenty of times with both. They are there to protect the hands not the face of the guy being hit.
Those of you who want to slag off boxing go into your local boxing club and tell them what pussys they are, never mind taking the shots you fags wouldnt even have the stamina to do 2 rounds, you have no idea how hard a sport it is so go back to watching men in thongs all oiled up and thinking you re tough because you bench 3 plates a side.
(yes im having a meltdown)

You are killing me here, how his  KO record could be any better with smaller gloves when he is 26-0 26 KO  ???.
Amateurs boxers  use head gear  and sometimes  bigger gloves  , speed , power and precision come with experience and years of training  that's why is a big difference between amateurs and professionals

Nowhere did I say his pro knockout record would be better with smaller gloves.  His amateur record would have been.  All the things you mentioned come into play, but simple logic tells you that his opponents at the pro level also have those same things going for them.

Its just common sense to me that as hard as someone like Valero hits, if he has smaller gloves, he will do more damage.  According to you guys, 40oz gloves wouldn't protect the other guys head, just his hands, so he should knock out just as many people if he wore 40oz, 60oz, or 80oz gloves.  And boy. would his hands ever be safe.

What i meant was the pain inside, like the headache, brain rattle if you know what i mean, a bare fist will cause a lot of damage in terms of cuts and bruising but a gloved punch seems to hurt more in terms of making one dizzy. My experience anyway.

Good stuff here. I agree with the post about boxing cardio and mma cardio. Boxing is very aerobic and if you can stay relaxed and are in good shape, you'll be okay. But BJJ like wrestling, and unlike boxing invokes muscular fatigue. The lactic acid buildup in your forearms and shoulders combined with the aerobic nature of pushing and pulling a resistant 200 lbs can make even the best boxer gas out in a few minutes.

I understand your point but Boxing has more muscular endurance than most people realize; legs and especially shoulders.
If you notice when a boxer gets tired their first instinct is to lower their arms.

People have to remember its not just about stamina but also about taking a punch, taking a blow to the body or face not only hurts but zaps energy very very fast.
Exerting yourself by loading up on every punch will drain your energy quickly aswell.

Also you have to take into account other variables such as the tempo of the fight and the opponent, does he punch hard? Is he a runner thus making you chase him? etc etcc
There is actually alot of wrestling in boxing with all the holding, if you are a brawler then you will want the opponent on the back foot and against the ropes. So naturally there will be alot of holding once you get up close.
