If any getbiggers were to throw around their spare pocket change which one would you get? The new BMW 335iS which is the touted as "the missing link" to the M3 or the M3.

I love BMW but I would not buy an M3 (and I have a 3 series).  As a practical matter, (in the USA) you are not going to have many opportunities to go all out in that car and really enjoy what it has to offer.  So, in effect you spending a lot of money for something that you are not going to get to use.  Better to get a regular 3 or a 3 with a DINAN upgrade and pocket the difference.  You will still come out way ahead of buying a M3.

And don’t worry, the regular 3 has plenty of power.  I used to drag race in mine and almost always won.  I have gone 130mph in my 328ci.

I have driven the M3 and, yes, it is a super car, but in my view it makes more sense to get a 3 or 3 with a DINAN upgrade and use the difference to buy yourself another toy.  Of course, if you literally have money to burn and are a serious 'car guy' then go ahead and get the M3.  It's certainly a handsome car!

So outside the USA there are more opportunities to go all out? Right....like everyone who has a high performance ride in Europe goes to Germany to drive on the autobahn.

I've ridden in a 3 series beemer and an M5. I'm assuming M3 has similar power to M3? I don't know if the main difference is that M3 is a coupe?

ANyways, M5 was a fucking beast. Go for the M3!

You and Pluck have good points to bring up
that is why they (BMW) have created the 335iS as a link or stepping stone to the M3. It is tuned by The M Division, whereas the M3 is built by The M Division---a direct product. The 335iS uses a turbo'd Inline 6, and the M3 a high revving 4.0 liter V8. Curiously the Inline has more torque than the M3.

Actually XFactor, you must remember than many of us don't have the funds to get a Lambo Gallardo. But there is a reason why many people take the M3 as a track day weapon or why the 24 hour Nurburgring race has hordes of race prepped M3s and Porsche Turbos, and a reason why BMW M Division has a test facility at that track. And that is becuase it is, when prepared, one of the best track cars, for the racer and everyday enthusiast. Far more so than the hyper Exotic Gallardo (except for the Balboni Edition).

Pretty much the E30 set the standard, and what you have now is basically a Ferrari with 4 seats, trunk, lux goodies, for over 1/3 the price. In fact the current m3 coupe is faster than the Ferrari 360 Modena, one of the most beautiful Ferraris (V8 or V12).

But, this was a question on which one you'd get so you did answer that. ;D

BMWs should not have turbos, just pure power. They are like a combination of the old American muscle cars and the Japanese race cars, some torque and some top end, not just one of the 2 + they handle very well.

Between the two an M3 hands down - turbochargers on 335 and overheating issues are troubling to me.  The M3 has more street cred and better resale plus cosmetically is better looking.  Naturally aspirated wins over turbo'd most times IMO.

BUT - I agree with the above post.  My money would buy the IS-F if only for superior reliability and less headache to live with on a day to day basis.  I have read in several long term tests though that the IS-F has a brutal suspension that is punishing on anything less than perfect pavement.

335i    $42,200
335is   $50,525
M3      $58,400

Like I said, get the 335i and use the $16,200 difference to treat yourself to another toy/vacation, etc.

The 328i and the M3 don't have turbos. The new 335i will have the single turbo engine, the 335iS will have the tt inline 6, the one with the HPFP problems.

2011 BMW 335is Coupe - First Drive Review
Minding the gap—between the 335i and the M3, that is.

To fill the gap in the 3-series lineup between the 300-hp 335i and 414-hp M3, BMW is introducing the 2011 335is coupe and convertible. We were unaware that said gap needed to be filled, but we’re told that the 335i is seen in the U.S. as just an ordinary 3-series, and as such, there’s room for something more exotic than a 335i but less outlandish than an M3. Now that we’ve been given the chance to drive the 335is coupe, we’re coming around to accepting this whole gap idea.

Conceptually similar to the 330i Performance package model that was available as part of the previous-generation 3-series lineup, the 335is doesn’t go so far as to threaten the M3’s supremacy, but it definitely ups the sportiness quotient. To that end, the 335is gets 320 hp and 332 lb-ft torque from the twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six engine, and an overboost function allows for seven-second blasts of 370 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the regular-grade 2011 335i, the 335is sticks with the older twin-turbo engine for the simple reason that BMW engineers had more experience tuning it. This same engine can also be found in the Z4 sDrive35is that was introduced at this month’s Detroit auto show. In the Z4, the engine makes 335 hp; a more restrictive intake on the 3-series accounts for the 15-hp difference.

To make the 335is a track-worthy vehicle, BMW upgrades the cooling system with an additional radiator and beefs up the engine mounts. Inside are standard sport seats, steel pedals, an M Sport steering wheel, and textured aluminum trim. Between the seats sits the familiar six-speed manual, but it’s modified here to have shorter throws. For those who prefer not to shift for themselves, BMW is offering its seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. The DCT system is identical to the one in the M3 and comes with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-type shifters... http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/car/10q1/2011_bmw_335is_coupe-first_drive_review

Get a 335i and a chip.  My brother has that and his car is pretty damn quick.  Nice overall car.  I like it better then my Cayman S.

Better if you put a Quaife LSD in it, along with the chip. Makes no sense to have 400 hp and One Wheel drive, the BMW Z8 had problems because it lacked a LSD.

No sport(y) car should ever be sold without an LSD, it's retarded.

Funny and odd, BMW does it with it's 3 and 5 series, even the 550i (Only The M models comes with a standard LSD--called M diff.),and Porsche did it with the Cayman S, but now they have given it a LSD. My IS300 comes standard with one.
