dude  you should entitle your posts much ado about nothing. life's too short to read all this crap. here's a good story for you to read.            i used to carpool  with this moron who paid 250 dollars for a car and had a 2000 dollar sound system installed by another moron. long story short second trip the car caught fire  250 dollar car and 2000 dollar system became history. moron two's  installation caused the fire subwoofer in trunk started the blaze.   see short concise interesting=elements for a good post. your welcome.

lol at these tards who spend thousands and thousand on a stereo and think it matters or impresses anyone.  It's fucking music, its the same song in the 100 dollar unit as it is in the 3000 unit. And what in the holy hell is accomplished by turning it up so loud anyways?

also--getitonny is a homo who loves Robert Burneika, but thats a whole other story

it's true. like the old steve martin joke, where the guy buys a system only to think it sounds like shit. he keeps spending more and more with the same results, till he realizes  it's only the needle that's defective. pre cd, mp3 etc joke.

Funk, if you dont like my post or they a waste of time, just dont read them.Go read a post that interests you. There are 1000 other posts you can involve yourself in.If you dont appreciate good muscis and good sound when you drive, thats your problem.
In Vegas people here drive stupid and crazy. So by having good muscis in my car, I can tune out the rude, and crazy drivers.
I dont play my system loud with the windows down.I used dynmat, and made my car sound proof and I keep my windows roled up.
I dont want to bother other people with my music. If I have it cranked up at a stop light, I usally turn it down not to disturb other drivers.
When I drive I want to enjoy driving, and if you dont, then dont onvolve yourself with this thread

Funk, My music taste is almost the same.I don't like most of todays music.I like 70's,80's and 90's music.I grew up listening to everything. My parents went to Woodstock believe it or not, lol.I like classic rock, grunge, hip hop, and some country.
I like stone Temple Pilots, Social Distortion,Jay Z,Beyonce, Old Madonna,James Newton Howard,Nirvana,The who, Michael McDonald,LL Cool J,Rhianna,Rush,Disturbed, and even dance music.
To me good music is good music, wether its rock rap or soul.I don't think today anybody listens to one type of music, you cant.
There is so much crossover artists, you got Jay Z using Rock lyrics, lol.
I think todays talent doesn't have the passion that musicians used to have.
Now anybody can go into a studio and sound good through voice synthesizers.Plus there is nothing like seeing a real band live. Not some person singing with electronic vocals.
I seen Michael McDonald a few months ago, and he was amazing......He had a great band, it was amazing
I need to stop, I am rambling again......this post stops here  ;)

Yeah it's a joke nowadays, they rate stuff at 1000 watts, what they don't say is that it's pretty much the amps breaking point, at which you will blow the amp, most kids assume RMS, but RMS on those would be around 75 or 1000... I forget the exact formula but I think RMS is aprox 20% of the whole max load for continuous power.

As far as brands you mentiioned! hell yeah I remember some of them!!! red Orion (back when they were good) Legacy was decent back then too, also Colossus and MMats, I almost bought a whole MMats setup when I was getting my kicker stuff, decided to go with kicker because it seemed more musical and MMats seemed strictly SPL competition stuff, I don't just blast bass in my system so I had to have audiophile graded gear for mids and highs as well, kids around here used to get a hard hitting monoblock class D amp with something like W7, run everything else stock (paper factory speakers, deck) and just crank the treble to 10 on the deck and bass to 0, I thought that was retarded, but that's kid mentality for ya..

I love some of the good old 90's brands, Cerwin Vega's were top notch, Phoenix Gold, MTX, etc.
a lot of them went under or are going under because they  can't compete with this made in china shit that blows after 2 motnhs, the stuff we know is still working hard without blinking after 10, 15 years

now that's QUALITY work!

Cool story about the Boston's I've always regarded them as audiophile quaility and elite for both car and home, I'm going to be putting a whole Boston system in my fiancee's car.

Any of you guys remember the MMAts Juggernauts 15" or 18" subs? In the mid to late 90s a friend of mine was into SPL comps and had a Nissan truck that had 2 of these Juggernauts subs in. The whole bed of the truck was fabricated with a bandpass box and 4 or 6 Fosgate amps ran the whole system. It would literally take your breath away and rattle your insides to be 10 ft near the truck at a competition ( I would never sit in it).

I had nothing near this powerful- 3 10" Fosgate HE2s with a 800RMS Fosgate amp with polk mids and highs. Sadly, I wish I had all that disposable income now :(

Fun little history, do you guy know when and who started the high power long excursion woofers for cars? You know the woofers with a thick surround and huge magnet assembly?
It was a company called Ground Zero. They made the woofers for Sunfire home subwoofers, made by Bob Carver.
These Home  subwoofers had amplfiers that put out 1500 and even 2700 watts.
So Ground Zero thought it would be a really good idea to bring them to car audio.
The only problem is when people put them in cars they sounded like shi$#
The reason for this is they were made and designed for small boxes, with huge amounts of power, and were loaded with a passive radiator. They werent made for booming bass or high SPL.
The good news is they opened the door for other companies to master the high excursion big magnet high caliber woofers.
Funk is this post short enough? It was brief but intense ;)

Cerwin Vega' OMG, I got a 15" Cerwin Vegas woofer I picked up at a garage sale for $10.This old guy had it laying around, it is out of there top of line 15" 4 way home speaker. The sucker works perfectly, the guy just wanted to get rid of it.
I may put it into a box, and use it as a sub for my computer.I want to build my own computer speakers.
Do you remeber the Cerwin Vega Stroker? those were very very durable and loud woofers..

Do you remember Harman Kardon when they used to make high end car Amplifiers? Those were some really good and strong amplifiers.
Harman Kardon Bought JBL and Infinite about 20 plus years ago.
You know JBL dont you? Thos woofers were some of the best built woofers in the world.
I remeber taking apart my JBL L-100 home speaker made in 1973 and it had a 6 lb magnet on the woofer with a cast frame.
I had a friend who took 2 JBL L112 woofers and put them in his car.lol.The reason why is they handled 300 watts and had a 12lb magnet on the woofer. He ran them in parellel and brided his amplifier and it saw 4oms mono, which is equal to 2 ohms, in most cases.
That care rocked, this was back in 1989,
Do remeber Lanzar, they looked just like Cerwin Vegas, they were good, buy very effcient woofers. There amps were really really good, until Pyramid bought them.Speaking of Pyramid, those SOB's bought the name Pyle Driver. You have to remeber Pyle driver????
My first system in High school was 2 santo 6100's with Pyle 1020 woofers, it was only 200 watts but it hit!
Pyle made some decent stuff, there 6x9 speakers were over built.Pyle wasnt the best brand, but you got a lot of bang for you buck.
Plus there were American Made.
Now this is going back really far.Do remeber The old Jensen Triaxial, and the Triax II???? At one time those were the shi#$# to have Jensen in your car, lol.Another really good company was Jetsound. They made the most powerful powerbooster EQ's, they has honest ratings. There were bascially car amplifiers with and eq on the face. Most power booster EQ's suck, lol.
They are all rated at 200-400 watts but are really just 12 watts per channel.
I know this because I have a few.I hooked them up to a wattage meter and most of them start giving out at 10 watts, lol. They are mostly just 1 or 2 10-12 watt IC chips.

As far as RMS goes it means ROOT Means Square, and your right about your definition.
Its funny how you mention these kids, who buy a 100 watt amp, to run there bass, and use there deck with factory speakers to run there highs. You always hear the bass rattling and the highs distorted to all hell when they drive by.But they got a booming system, lol.
True story, do you remeber Majestic Amplifiers?

Well I used to sell them as my lower line. The kids loved them because back them they could get a 300 watt or 500 watt amp for around $150-$200.Anyways this kid cvomes by my store and says his  300 watt amps keeps cutting off.
I looked in has back seat and he had like 10 diffrent home speakers hooked up to it, most of them cheap, and he had the amp bridged mono.So this amplifier was seeing about a 1/4 ohm load, and the amp was only 2 oms stable.
Not to mention half of the speakers were blown becauser they were cheap speakers, like Soundesign, Emerson, and they were only rated at 10 watts. So between the distortion and to much power, he blew them out.
I sold him a pair of MTX terminator 10" woofers and he was happy as could be, and his amp never shut off again.
I had another guy come in who bought a amplifer, and his amp kept cutting out.He bragged about his dad being a electrician, wiring houses.
Thank god we had a fire extinguisher at the store because his car caught on fire.
It turns out his day, used some single stang house wire to  his sons amplifier. If you know anything about single stand wire, its not flexable, like standed wire.So when he ran the wire down the throught the firewall of the car, the movement broked the insulation.
So it ignited right in the parking lot, and started to burn his carpet.I put it out before there was to much damage.,
I had one of our installers rewire his amplifier for him and he was happy.
Lastly JL audio old stuff is very good.I ma not to crazy about there new stuff. They used to be American made, and hand built, just like Kicker and MTX.
So your running a kicker Solo Baric? Isnt that the square woofer.I remeber when they first came out, they were round.
They cost $300 a pop back in 1992.
I was going to buy those, but I bought the kicker free Air instead. My friend was a Kicker delaer and gave me my 12" woofers for $70 a pop.So I got 4 12" for the price of one Solo baric.
Bsck then money was tight.I almost went with OZ audio, do you remeber OZ audio? They were really good speakers with Rubber surrounds. My buddy talked me into the kickers, because at $70 a pop how could I go wrong. That was his cost.
He was a cool guy.
Like I said in my last post, my son still has those Kicker speakers I bought in 1993, and they still work like new.
Your Kicker speakers will probably out live you.

OMG, I know all those brands!!! I remember Pyle, they weren't the greatest but they worked, and the Jensen in the beginning were pretty good but then turned into a wal mart brand.. I've been a huge fan of Harman Kardon all my life, in fact most of my home theater amplifiers (I have home theatre in 3 rooms) are Harman, I love them.. only thing better is Denon but that's getting pricey!, it's funny you mention JBL's because  I run JBL's (ES80's) for my main computer audio off of a Harman AVR 1600 and I also have a pro tools rig on my second machine that runs professional studio monitors for reference or when I am mixing/recording. The JBL/Harman for the computer was the best decision I've ever made, though I've had good speakers for my computers going back 8 years, I always watch movies on my machine or listen to mp3's and my computer room is what should be the dining room so the music fills the living room and kitchen..back in the day I used to have a Technics setup with a pair of high end bookshelf's running off of a Yamaha natural sound receiver :)

For my main system though I use B & W speakers running through Harman (again, lol) sound is crystal and unreal.

mY MAIN SYSTEM I got 2 Nakamichi PA 7's one for the bass one for the highs, its bi-amped
The Nakamichi PA7 A Stasis power supply that was designed by Threshold technologies.
Threshold amps are the best but they are big and heavy. My amps weigh 70lbs each, lol
.I am using Polk SDA SR 1.2 .They have 8 6 1/2" midbass's and 1 15" bass radiator, with 4 soft dome tweeters. They weigh 200 lbs and stand 60" tall.
I have 200 watts per channel  going to the bass, and 200 per channel watss going to the highs. So they are getting 800 watts total.
Yhe amps are so underated though. My speakers are rated at 1000 watts, but those amps push them to the limit. They have very very high current. They have 18 output transistors per channel
I am using a Carver Pre-amplifier, a CT 17, tuner pre-Amp, and I have an Old Denon top of the line CD pLAYER.
iTS SOUNDS AMAZING, There is nothing like a good speaker being biamped.
I love my Polk Speakers, I always wanted then since they came out in 1985.Back then they were $3000, and I GOT THE SR 1.2 that went for $3400 per pair in 1994.They are the improved version of the original.
I bought them last year.It was worth the wait.

Captain, you got B&W speakers,? Bowers and Wilkens is good stuff. What model do you have the 802, or 803 or?
I almost bought a pair of 803's but the guy a jerk on Ebay, so I gave up.
Bowers and Wilkens are cool, I love the soft dome tweeter they put on top of the 803, I think it is.
Have you ever heard of M&K ,Miller and Kresiel, they make some good stuff.I got a pair of the speakers in my den.
They were the first company to sell a seperate sub with satelites.
Captain I am going to test your knowledge here.
What model JBL speaker came out with a 12 amplified subwoofer, and had 2, 3 way satelites, with 8" woofers 4" midrange and a silver soft dome tweeter? They were produced in 1970 and cost $2000.....?
It was the L212 system.I got one, I bought at an auction 14 years ago.I am currently restoring them.I picked up the whole system at an auction for $225.I felt like I won the lottery. The 12" woofer has a 14 lb magnet and a 4" voice coil. The 8" midbass has a 6lb magnet and a 3" voice coil. They sound amazing, they just need some TLC, they are 30 years old.
Captain are you bi-amping your B&W SPEAKERS? A speaker that good should be bi-ampled.B&W is one of the top speaker makers ever made.Do you remeber the Carver cube? It was a home amplifier that was about 5" by 5" and it had 200 wpc? Those were small but generated a crap load of power.

Another good home amplifier is Adcom.I got a adcom 555 it has 200 wpc, but if you bridge it mono it will produce 800 watts.Adcom I beleive was owned by Fosgate.I bought the amplifer from a guy for $200.He was in hard times.
Its a good amplifier, I might use it for a subwoofer.

Would it be the L-100 ;)  ?? one of JBL's best selling and most coveted designs!

I was lucky enough to purchase a pair of Bowers & Wilkins a year ago, they are not the super high end B & W's like Nautilus or 800's, they are the lower end 610's , but still phenomenal speakers, of course they are bi-amped! I'm not too familiar with Carver, tell me more about them..

I am always on the lookout for good deals locally on stuff like B&W , Paradigm, Boston Acoustic
my fiancee thinks I'm insane, I have maybe 8 or 9 speaker sets around our place, lol but there's nothing like good music coming from good spekears.

Captain ,you dont know about Bob Carver????? He was a legend in the Audio industry, he designed the BIG BAD Phase Linear amplifiers back in the 1970's then made his own line. You havent heard of Carver amps? They use Magnetic Feild, so they produce tons of power.
He also owns Sunfire, they are 2700 wats home subwoofers.
Bob Carvers amps are bad ass, they even make prosound.Look up the Carver M-400.It is a cube that is 7" by7" its a cube. Its small but puts out 200 watts per channel, and 500 watts mono.I have one of these and its small but it will drive any speaker.
Speaking of L-100's I got a piar in my office. They were my fathers, he bought them new in 1973, and they still work and sound like new.The only thing is the grill foam has worn off, because they dry rotted.
They weigh 50lbs each.lol.One speaker I want is a pair of L-112's just to have.
Dude dont tell me about audio, and wives, lol.My wife must be a saint .
I have literally 3 room fulls of audio equiptment.I have a small side buissness , I buy and restore vintage audio equiptment.I really dont try make any money but its a hobby I love.I buy sell and trade.
Lets put it this way, I got 20 Vintage Kenwood recievers all from 1970, and are from the KR series.
I got a piar of B&W speakers, I got the Rock Solids, they are a 5" two way speaker with a 1" poly carbonate tweeter.
They have little stands that elevate them.
I got equiptment from Cerwin Vega, JBL,,Mission,Bose,Klipsh,Adcom,Sansui,Pionneer Onkyo,Fosgate Phoenix Gold,Fisher Carver,Jensen,Polk Audio,you anme it I have it, lol ;D

It was brief but intense ;)
i liked it,  brief interesting and informative not only for the audiophile but for the passive reader. good job.

Funk ,Thank you.....What was funny was the year was I beleive 1996 at C.E.S.,The Consumer Electronic Show.I remember walking by the booth of the company Ground Zero. There was a huge crowd around all looking in awe over this 12" woofer. This sucker was huge.!!!! It must have been 20"-24" deep and it weighed about 45lbs.It had a 3" thick rubber surround and a magnet that was massive.I never seen anything like it.This thing looked very very intense.
They were bragging how it would handle 3000 watts, and how it went down to 12-15hz.
All the SPL guys were drooling over this sucker.Becuase at the time a 1000 watt woofer was really about all there was.
This sucker would handle 3000 watts continous and like 6000 watts peak.
The only problem was is was designed for home use, with a 2700 watt high current amplifier. It also was made to be in a small enclosure loaded with a passive radiator, that acted as a port.
The good news if you look at todays woofers, JL,MTX,Memphis,Polk Audio,Hifonics, even Cerwin Vega,.They all are using realy thick massive rubber surounds and huge magnet structures now.
I think Ground Zero was onto something, they just didnt make the necessary adjustment to make there woofers more efficient and geared towards SPL.If a woofer is designed to be used with a 2700 watt amplifier, and you run 1000 -1500 watts to it, the thing will sound like Shi$#.You know a car is a whole diffrent world then car. What sounds good at home, doeant work in a car, and vice versa.
Check out Sunfire subwoofers, by Bob Carver, they are really realy cool 8)
