Oatmeal vs. Beans
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:47:38 PM »
Why does practically every bodybuilder's diet especially cutting diets have oatmeal for breakfast?

It doesn't taste very good and seems everyone looks for ways to sweeten it or make it taste better.  What about beans instead?

I  checked the label of red kidney beans and half a cup serving has 130 calories, 6 g fiber, 9 g protein and 17 g remaining carbs.  Seems it is higher in fiber than oatmeal, higher in protein, is also cheaper, easier to swallow, no prep time, and doesnt need water or to add anything to sweeten it.

Is there something I am missing?

I actually find it easier to choke down than oatmeal!

So there isn't some hidden benefit to oatmeal which makes practically every dieting bodybuilder have it for breakfast?

I would even prefer simply eating whole wheat bread over oatmeal

From a dieting standpoint, if you like the bean  :-\ fine.  They're very low GI/GL and high in fiber. I'd avoid the bread if contest type dieting though.

Sounds like you just stopped short of saying that beans are a better carb source when dieting than oatmeal?  Whutt is your opinion on this?

Also why is bread no good for contest dieting?  Even whole-wheat?

Nah, I wouldn't say the beans are better per se.  If you like them better, it's about an equal trade off.

It’s definitely true that whole wheat flour is more nutritious than refined 'white' flour.  But whole wheat and white bread have essentially the same impact on blood sugar. On the other hand, if you can find bread which is specifically designed to be low in carb, it can be a better choice for a low-carb diet (they usually substitute more fiber for the starchy part of the wheat).

and higher protein!  I dont find beans gross, I think they taste better and are easier to preprae than oatmeal and if you look at princess' avatar i would put my money that the bunny is more likely chewing on beans than oatmeal
