Changing up the routine?
« on: February 23, 2010, 05:48:32 PM »
How often do you all change your routine? What kind of changes do you make?

I've been doing a 3 day push/pull/legs split for 3 months and bulking up. I've gained 15 pounds and a lot of strength in that time with no supplements at all. It's worked great.

Within each workout I try to do different excercises each time to mix it up, but now I think I should just change my whole routine to try to keep my progress going.

I've been thinking about trying a 4 or 5 day split of some kind. What do you think? What works best?

Every six workouts something old goes out, and something new comes in.

In my opinion once you find the correct training frequency  for you, that should never change. What can and should change are excercises and rep ranges. So if you have success training each bodypart once a week, stick with that. You can change the way you split up your bodyparts and what gets trained with what. For me, hitting each muscle group once every five days works the best, sometimes I train three days a week rotating an A workout and B workout over the three days, sometimes when I don't have a lot going on I will do four days on, one day off . My favorite is cycling and A,B, and C workouts over four days a week. The movements change, the sets and reps change, the split changes, but my frequency stays the same.

There are certain exercises that have always worked for me. I will never eliminate them from my "routine"

as far as changing a regimen or a routine, my workouts are done in accordance with my daily life. Since my life is so dynamic, so are my "routines"

Every day is a new day, as is every workout.

That's how I do it too. Sometimes i'll lift 3 days in a row, sometimes i'll take 3 days off, it all depends on my schedule and how I feel.

But I do follow general splits, like right now it's push/pull/legs and it's working great for me. I'm wondering if it would give me any benefit to change my split, or if I should just stick with the split I have and change up the excercises and rep ranges and all that.

Start changing things when it stops working, if you have been training for at least three years and you found a routine that is allowing you progress in strength and muscle mass consistently don't mess with it, because eventually you will have to tweak it but until then ride it out.
If you really insist on changing it, I would change the movements. Just make sure that what you are substituting has a simiar value compared to what you took out. For example changing squats for front squats is good, changing squats for leg extensions is not.

I've switched over to a HIT style training. 2 sets per exercise, first set heavy but just short of failure, 2nd set, pick a weight and get like 3-4 reps with good form, then drop the weight and get out another 3-4 reps. Still getting use to how much quicker my workouts are, but already i can tell that i like it. Seems weird only doing like 6 sets for chest, but physically it feels good.
No doubt about it...
