This wasn't about you....get over yourself and put down the pipe, this was about a bodybuilding legend Vince Gironda....


I was one of the guys who went to Vince's Gym in North Hollywood. I found a small, poorly equipped gym. On the wall were photos that testified that Gironda was a special guy. He was the trainer to the movie stars and could whip them into shape quickly. I trained there a couple of times. Even had a sip of water like Larry Scott did between some sets. The fountain was in the change room at the back. In 1980 I visited the gym with two of my children. Vince wasn't there so I had to call him. He said it was okay to use the name Vince's Gym for my club in Sydney. I had a look upstairs where he had a simple setup to train women. Too little, too late, I though.

Well, whatever gyms should be the industry has moved past what Joe Gold and Vince Gironda set up in the sixties. They had gyms catering only to male bodybuilders. I realised long ago that the successful clubs had women members. Matter of fact, you want more women than men as members. When you have the proportion more men join.....for some odd reason! So, maybe it was inevitable that the original Golds and Vinces Gyms are no longer with us.

I have a much better gym with heaps better equipment and my gym has never been featured in any bodybuilding magazine. Amazing. Maybe I am on some blacklist or something. No blue stars on Getbig, not an expert on IronAge, no recognition from the magazines that I even designed and built gym equipment.

I especially enjoyed one of basiles' posts regarding his interactions with vince gironda on the next page of that thread...

When I first visited his gym in October 1968 I had just picked up some photos I took of Arnold outside Golds at Venice. I told Vince and he said to get them so he could see. When I did he shouted out, "Here's a guy who keeps photos of guys in his car!" There were several guys gathered around to have a look. Vince enjoyed that remark so much he repeated it but much louder the second time so that the whole gym could hear. My immediate reaction was that this man was indeed an A**hole. We get what we deserve in life and we deserve what we get.

I've trained in Vince Basile's in Sydney... It's fucking brilliant!

I've used the specialist equipment Vince welded together himself; some of it was simply ingenious, and most of it was more effective than anything I've used since the original Nautilus machines.

When I asked Roz if Vince was around so I could introduce myself (we've conversed here and on ironage.us); she told me he wouldn't be in that day but that as a Getbigger I could train for free.

When I finished my workout, not wanting to seem like a freeloader and noticing that Roz wasn't at the reception, I tried to pay for my visit as I left... the trainers at the reception refused my payment while citing a memo stuck to the register "Don't let the Irish guy pay - friend of Vince's".

   

Joe, have you ever taken the time to build or modify any equipment at YOUR gym? Do you let visiting GetBiggers train for free?

Didn't think so.

Vince is good people, and a credit to this board... you, sir, are neither.

His gym pictures are in his Smugmug photos.  Its a pretty large facility from the look of it and from what I understand it has over 400 pieces of exercise equipment so he has to have some room to house all that stuff.

However, Vince has never explained as to how he came to own the gym as it was not originally his.  How did he come up with the scratch to buy it???    

BTW, nice picture from his high school days.  Check out the cheerleading squad.  You know there was no black folks there;D

from what I have seen in pics and shit, the  only real gym is that one that Coleman and Branch train at, Metroflex.  Dobson didn't fall victim to catering to plastic dumbbell family oriented no chalk bullshit pussy gyms. That gym looks like the real deal.  Everything else pales in comparison,...well except Temple gym, that looks awesome.

Yes, I just found that out.  So you're just a  personal trainer with a large set of tires.....

BTW, if you build your facility like that, it is bound to fail.  You won't be able to pay the bills simply training athletes....
