Soccer (as my US friends call it), is the biggest sport in the world, and the players earn obscene amounts of money, eg: Ashley Cole cheats on wife, Chelsea fines him 400'000 pounds (less than a months salary for Ash, but enough for me to retire comfortably and live it up... crazy
Whats really impressive, is the big 5 sports in the US/Canada, American football, ice hockey, basketball, baseball, NASCAR. They're only really big there (basketball has fans in europe and parts of asia and africa, but small / ice hockey also played in eastern europe, but small-time), however, the salary packages, endorsements and earnings those involved earn to cater for a relatively small (compared to soccer) audience is huge.
If you compare soccer vs "the USA sports, take the fan ratio of both into account, US sports are paid much more money. Mega marketing, which explains why every play has a sponsored slow-mo, its just short of the ref holding a Bud during the game.
Nascar is mostly a southerner sport, right? But a multi-billion dollar industry in its own right!
Same for ice-hockey, not big in the warmer states but still massive money!
Baseball has been taken over by the neighbours to the south, but those salaries!
Basketball is the best one, the only dream left for the tall players from the projects, controlled mostly by whites, amazing skill, big money!
Typical American, go big or go home. Works for them.
