i think your going to find it hard to get thick seperation and striations in yoru quads without leg extensions, they are simply the best at isolating the quads, and really seem to boost definition. they dont do much at all for size, maybe a little bti to the tear drop, upper outer top of the quads, but its main effect is to etch in the V muscle in the middle of the quadracep, at least thats what it does for me

Squats and Lunges are much better for people with knee problems in a controlled manner meaning no bouncing. They are natural movements.

muscle contraction is natural, whether its fixed plane or not. yes, free wieights are definitely much more natural than any kind of machine because the balance, angle, plane and range of motion are all controlled and dictated by you, and all your "core" and stabilizer muscles. however, just because a lift is done on a machine with a fixed plane of motion, doesnt mean it loses effectivness at stimulating the target muscle. although one might need more total weight due to differences in angle and friction between free weights and machines..

Kicking a ball. I swear when I done them I had ridiculous power in my shot when I played.

My leg routine is very basic. Squat, deadlift, front squat, leg curl and leg extension. Simples.

Old age?

Unless you're doing it for bodybuilding, they're pretty much useless.

Great way for training glutes without taking a seat of shame on the butt machine.

Why?

Because the entire weight of the body (plus barbell) is solely focused onto one knee to stall the weight, recover, and get you back up for the next rep - there's too much pressure focused on one point which is seriously unbalanced from a biomechanics point of view. Lunges are supposed to hit the lower quads but you'll get the same results (if not better) with hacks where the whole body is sufficiently supported evenly.

Dorian never did lunges and I come from that school of thought - you'll never see anyone in Temple Gym doing lunges - besides, there just isn't the room!

Muscles can only shrink, stay the same or get bigger, definition is achieved by lowering bodyfat, hope this helps.

Well you can say that about the leg curl too.   I don't remember having to lay on my back and push anything off me, so the bench press too is worthless as is the incline and decline.  I can't remember the last time I had to lay on my back and lower something to my forehead and then press it back up (skullcrushers).  Wow I could list all kinds of exercises that would be worthless then.  So in your opinion how would we work these muscles.  Just wondering

before you start calling people names, learn to back up your quote. I have more use for a leg curl than I do for a leg extension and from an athletic stand point, we will bicep curls for basically 2 reasons...1. To give my athletes a bigger ego and 2. To help keep their elbows healthy.

We will do hammer and zottman curls in some of our rotator cuff work.
